Day 2 and holding on!

Well...this is my second quit in 2 weeks but considering that I haven't tried for 17 years I guess that I am doing okay. I am so sick and tired of planning my life around cigarettes. I want to be able to go out and enjoy myself without worrying about when I am going to get to have my next cigarette. I've gone away for girl's weekends and instead of thinking about all the fun that we are going to have, I am thinking about having to go outside every time I want a cigarette. I have nephews and nieces that I adore but I sometimes make excuses for them not to drive in my car with me because I want a cigarette. I am sooooooooooo tired of this. BUT...it is sooooo hard to quit. I have managed to take cigarettes out of my workday but I always look sooooooo forward to coming home and playing a game of cards on the internet and smoking cigarettes. It is hard to find something to replace this. On the "Up" side, I have never spent so much time at the gym as I have in the last two weeks because it is one place where I don't think about smoking and I don't want to smoke. I find the end of the day REALLY hard. (Green tea and cinnamon sticks just aren't cutting it) However, it's the weekends that worry me the most. Work fills alot of time but the weekends give me way too much time to think about smoking. Any suggestions?? This is probably the hardest thing I have ever had to do and I need all of the help I can get. Hope one day next year I will be messaging. Windy - quit date Sept 11/2006! 2 days closer!

Wish me luck

Hi Al This is day 2 for me. I did three days last week and blew it on the weekend. (I had no plan and was going nuts by Saturday night). I've been smoking for 26 years and the last time I tried to quit was 17 years ago. I'd read that people often have to quit 5 to 7 times before they succeed and I honestly didn't think I could go through that 5 - 7 times. Right now I am so sick and tired of planning my life around cigarettes. I hate the fact that I avoid social situations because I can't smoke. I hate going outside by myself in the winter. I hate the fact that my health is deteriorating despite the fact that I go to the gym. Last week was mostly hell but I had one amazing day. We went to ball game in Toronto and I didn't get home until 2 in the morning. It was the first time that I didn't worry about when I was going to get my next cigarette, how long till I could get home, etc. etc. I am using the patch which helps alot with the physical withdrawal. (I figure that I am going deal with one thing at a time and giving up the habit is enough for me right now) I'm afraid that I haven't planned my quits that well but I am just doing one day at a time. I hope that each day will turn into a week and each week will turn into a month etc etc. But...one day is far enough for me to think about right now. If I fail, I will be one step closer to quitting for good because THEN I will get all those supposed fails out of the way. I can hardly wait for the day when I can plan my life around ME and not around cigarettes! Don't give up! Wishing you all the best!

Quit today on 9/11

Hi Jan I just wanted to talk to someone who is at the same stage as I am. I quit on Sept 11th too. I didn't think about the significance of the date until I came home from work that day. I haven't tried to quit for 17 years but last week, I decided it was time. I quit for 4 days and started again on Saturday. I decided to try again on Monday. The first 2 days were okay but I am having a terrible day today. I swear, if there was a cigarette in this house right now I would smoke it! Hope your quit is going well! Good luck! How do I quit something I started when I was 15!! HELP!!

I have been reading alot of discussions about people experiencing depression after quitting and this is a big worry for me. I started smoking well before I was old enough to make good decisions so I taught myself to rely on cigarettes for EVERYTHING. Feeling depressed - have a cigarette, Feeling anxious - have a cigarette, Feeling out of place - have a cigarette, Feeling bored - have a cigarette, Feeling stressed - have 20 cigarettes, etc etc I have been using cigarettes to deal with all my problems for over 20 years and NOW I AM GOING TO GIVE THEM AWAY!! I guess we all reach some stage where the benefits of quitting outweigh the desire to keep smoking but today is a bad day and I really want to smoke. I am sick and tired of cigarettes controlling my life and I am sick and tired of being a smoker but I don't know what to do when I feel depressed, anxious, bored, stressed etc. HELP! This Coming Weekend Trip

It's amazing how our thoughts work and how ingrained smoking has become in our lives. I love spending time with my family but as I have become more and more addicted to smoking, I have started to dread extended family visits because nobody else smokes and there is always pressure to quit. I am looking forward to being able to spend time with them as a non-smoker. On the other hand, I am sitting here at work long past quitting time because I am dreading going home. The cravings are SOOOO strong today and I find it so hard to get through the evenings. However, I know abit of what you are feeling because I find that I dread doing anything that I associated with smoking and look forward to doing things where it isn't easy to smoke. I won't even DARE try to open up a bottle of wine for a long time!! I hope that you have a good weekend with your family and with your sisters. I imagine the first one will be the hardest. Would you please let me know how things went? Day 2 and holding on!

Thanks for all the support and helpful ideas. This is day 3 and I am sitting at my desk well past quitting time. I knew at 2:00 today that this was going to be a tough day. (Don't ask me why - it was no more stressful than any other day) I am dreading going home because that has always been my smoking haven and I can't smoke. (Well - I can but I won't) Dee Dee, I would definately like to partner up. I haven't figured out how to get instant messaging working on my computer but I will see if I can find one of your posts in this room. ~ Beginning my journey ~

Hi Dee Dee Well...it wasn't too hard to find your post. I am on Day 3 and I am using the patch. (Believe it or not I score low on the physical addiction side but I knew that I couldn't deal with the physical withdrawal and the habit withdrawal at the same time) I haven't tried to quit for 17 years (I'm 42) because the first and only time was so hard that I never wanted to try again...but cigarettes are controlling my life and ruining my health. I am so sick and tired of smoking and yet I seem to be spending most of my time thinking about them) Crazy eh? I quit last week for 4 days and out of the four had one amazing day. This has helped motivate me to try again. Day 1 and Day 2 weren't too bad....but for some reason Day 3 is giving me a problem. I think that I really need to plan more into my evenings because I have a hard sitting at home and relaxing. I went to the gym this morning instead of the evening so perhaps that is part of the problem. The gym seems to give me a boost at the end of the day and seems to delay the craving to smoke. (Amazing - because I HATED going to the gym at the end of the day before because it cut into my smoking time) Anyway..I'm sure this is starting to bore you. I guess today, I will just focus on getting through till tomorrow and hopefully day 4 will be easier. Boy - I wish there was a much easier way to get through this! Hope all goes well with your doctor's appt and look forward to talking to you soon. How do I quit something I started when I was 15!! HELP!!

Thanks you guys....it's almost bedtime so I made it through another day. Sparky...I see your name on here alot. It really inspires me to know that someone can quit after 50 years. I'm going to work on that list (I hate housework so that one won't do...I always get it done first thing Saturday morning so I can get it over with)I've been looking a night courses and might try something like that. You guys are so right...distraction is great (Blue Jays game last week and didn't think about smoking all day/went to my nephew's game last night which kept me busy till 9) It's the nights when I don't have anything planned that are killers (and those used to be my favourite nights!!??) Butterfly, I am using the patch...but honestly I think that if I can overcome the psychological addiction, I will be okay with the physical addiction. I never smoked in the morning and for the past two years, i haven't smoked until the end of the day. (That was my first step in quitting smoking - delay that first cigarette - i just made up for it by smoking more at night though) I remember a time when I couldn't write an essay or a report without smoking. (I would take paperwork home so I could smoke while doing it) Now I don't think twice about doing long reports at work soooooooooo surely I should be able to other things without smoking too right???) I knew quitting wouldn't be easy and it's not...but boy would it be nice to get to the end of this journey!
