Hi Green eyes
I tried my first quit in 17 years last week. (I knew I probably wasn't going to quit for good at that time but I decided that I was tired of not even trying) I knew that quitting was hard and I've heard that many people (not all) have to try 5 - 7 times before they succeed.
I started again on Monday (Sept 11th) and I am just going one day at a time. I don't think about forever (except on the good days) On the bad days I just think about getting through that day. Learning to smoke became a habit and I'm hoping that not smoking will become a habit too. It sure isn't easy but those that have gotten through the worst times inspire me to believe it will get better.
I am sick and tired of smoking but I am sick and tired of beating myself up too. Quitting is a learning process and it takes time. Please don't beat yourself up. You will do this.
My thoughts are with you! Take care of yourself! You can do it.

I always love to hear from you! Have a good weekend!

Hey Al...I absolutely HATE to fail at things (which is a major character defect as far as I'm concerned...but hey - that's me) I have only ever tried to quit once before and that was 17 years ago. Last week, I quit for 4 days and then caved but I decided it was a success because at least I had tried.
So for me...each day I don't smoke is a success. I have to be honest, there are so many times that I don't think that I am going to make it. I hope that doesn't happen but, if it does, I figure I am learning how to quit.
We'll be there for you when you are ready and we'll be there for you until you are!

Hi Hopeless (although you most certainly aren't) My meter started when I filled out my personal profile. I've actually quit for 5 days but I've added 15 mins to my life. (kinda planning on adding afew more minutes though!)
I haven't had a cigarette but there are times when I sure would like one.

I'd like a mentor too...but it doesn't appear that anyone uses instant messenger. Like Marie, I've been in there but noone else there.

I say "jump in the shower and cry" if that's how you feel. Just remember the celebrate and enjoy the good days because they will come too!

I used to force myself to go the gym twice a week. Now I go almost every day. Aquafit, biking, walking - it doesn't really matter what - it seems to really help. I just started back to Yoga too.
I have always done my smoking at the end of the day so I am taking the time to enjoy the mornings. I get up earlier, get jobs done and then, if I feel like it, I wrap myself up in a blanket at nite and watch t.v.
However, ANY distraction helps - going out to smoke-free restaurant instead of eating in, going to a ball game.
I still need to work on the IMMEDIATE stress-reducers (for those moments when I feel like I might burst) I've been trying the deep breathing and it seems to help so I think I'll keep it up.
This is a good threat - I can use all the ideas that I can get.

Hi Pink
I think you are doing great...I'm at 5 days too but with the patch. I think if I had already quit for 5 days without it, I would be reluctant to use it. However, I knew that I had to get over my emotional/psycholigical attachment to cigarettes first the patch was for me.
I am no Physician so take this with a grain of salt, but I did have a friend who was prescribed a very mild dose of ativan to take on occasion when she was quitting (to help with that anxiety stuff) and it worked for her. She's been a non-smoker for about 3 years now and doesn't need the Ativan anymore.
Of course, we're all so different so only you and your Doctor know what is best for you!
Keep up the good work!
