Hang in there my friend, you are fighting with an illusion...But sadly because we have trained ourselves to hide in the smoke, it is all to real for us addicts...You will not reduce your stress by smoking, you will, however, believe that by inhaling the stuff your stress has been relieved...In a sense it has, but it is the stress created by the ingestion and then the lack of nicotine that is being relieved...Any stress that has accumulated as a result of ordinary human existance still remains...Let it go, there is no future in it...

Good for you, you are taking the long view on this...That is the way to move forward...It really is one day at a time, but in the back of the mind, we must never forget that we are creating better futures four ourselsves...There is no upside to smoking...There is only a momnetary satisfaction followed by a slow decent back to our former dependent selves.
I don't ever want to be a victim, and really I am not a victim to cigarettes. I chose to smoke and now I must do what is necessary to change that decision. I promise you this, as you go further down the line, smoking will become a real choice. In the early days of my quit, it haunted me like an old memory that just would not go to land of the forgotten. But slowly, as I taught myself to choose day by day that memory lost its power and I gained new powers to leave by past way of being in the past...

Dreams are good, for me they are ways of working things out before we face them in the "real" world...I like to think that they are methods of convincing ourselves of the correctness of the things we are about to do...They happen alot during smoking cessation, some of mine where full technicolor extravaganzas...Interesting and instructive st the same time...

I guess when we choose to make ourselves better, we don't always get to choose the setting in which we will accomplish our goal. I did not have to be in the company of smokers during my journey, so it is hard for me to offer any advice, except to say that this is in many ways a solitary journey. However, you have the solidity of this group and there are people who have faced your situation and seen it through...Listen to them and take hope in the fact that they are making great progress in spite of the obstacles faced...

I suppose on some level fear is a motivator, I am not so sure that it is the best motivator, but sometimes we just have to use what we have. I can tell you with hand on heart that you are not alone in your trepidations.
Why not plan well for this, use the resources that are available here and move forward with your journey. There are many people from all walks of life that will go along with you and offer assistance as needed. Take heart from the people who have begun where you are now and remain smoke free, in some cases, for years. My quit is still in the journeyman stage, but I am determined to never smoke again and I am also vowing to help as many people as I can do the same.
Take the time to put your fear aside and usher in a new time for yourself of caring for yourself in a way that you perhaps never thought possible...We will all help you, but somewhere at the heart of it, you must believe that you can walk this trail, having faith in yourself and the meaningfulness of your goal.
There is no single magical answer to the paradox of why we smoke, there is however, a single and powerful tool that we as humans have at our command. That tool is the ability to change our perceptions about the events in our lives so that every little misstep is not met with a dash for the confort of a smoke. Once you begin to see that you have this power, you will begin to make it better...
