OMT you are so inspiring! We are almost at day 10... I think if I can finish my talk today I'll follow your suggestion and spend a nice evening tomorrow pampering myself too :) If not... I'll just take those 5 minutes and put them to good use like you did.
Stay strong buddy!

Thanks guys! And tomorrow is yet a new number to celebrate... #10 :)
Keeping track of the days as they go by does really help... feeling more and more motivated now. After reading my post from yesterday I can't even believe it has only been one day since I wrote it. It's like a week has passed. Today I had only one big crave in the morning when I saw one of my old smoke buddies but that was it. I thought about it a couple of times but always thought right after that even if I had the opportunity to have one then I wouldn't want it. It's a great feeling!

Hey OMT, I had quit 13 years ago :P. I know... how stupid can you be to start again after that long. The thing is I also had quit mainly because my current ex was completely against smoking and to have someone so against it in your life everyday does help keep you away from it. Anyway, I'm going through a divorce now and when things exploded I felt like I was 17 again and could go back to my old self. For some strange reason that included picking up smoking again :P Fool! I didn't think I would get hooked again because it had been so long I was a non-smoker and I used to have such an aversion to it. Well... it started as social smoking and ended 10 days ago when I had gone back to smoking 15 a day and wondering what the heck I was doing, not feeling in control of my life.
10 days have passed and it is getting better every day. From the first time I quit I remember the 3 month mark... I remember one day thinking wow it's been three months! And thinking even though I'm having coffee w/ my buddies (all of them smoked) I don't want to have one. That was a good feeling. After that I only remember puffing again from a friend's cig one night when we were pretty drunk and I felt gross and coughed a lot when I did it... it was like the first one, so I didn't even like it. Until this past year... but eh, it was one year of relapse and nothing more.
We'll help you out when you reach that 3 month line :) keep strong buddy!

Hey Cat! Are you getting your swimsuit ready? I think the temps are still pretty good there and will remain in the next few days.
I'm from Cascais :) Nao sou tia, nao te preocupes hehehehe. Which beach do you usually go to? Are you going to guincho? It may be a little cold around there but any one beach in the "linha" should still be quite pleasant. Gosh I miss the beach soooooo much!
Enjoy every moment of it.
Are you in grad school? Which field? My PhD project is in neuroscience but I got my masters in biochem doing breast cancer research. I can't wait to be done and go back :) I miss Europe soooo much! (especially the beach :P). I have a friend studying here with me and he's from Lisbon too. Every so often we'll dwell on the little quirks of our beautiful country... i.e. spending hours with your buddies at a terrace having an espresso and discussing pretty much everything in life :P.
Congrats again on your quit! Celebrate it, you deserve it! I know how hard it is to quit in Portugal :P

So the days are getting better and better. The cravings are milder now, easier to control, especially with the wonderfully positive vibes which gooffy and the rest of our musquitters and octobreathers have been sending off. It's great to be able to share the difficult moments with you guys.
But now I'm anxious about this weekend. I can't wait for it. First because I know that I will have practiced my talk at lab meeting on friday and will have gotten some advice on tweeking the last little details to make it a better talk. Second because it will mean that I will have made it through 15 days and that is half a month... what a victory that will feel like! I just can't wait :)
I've been sitting at home all day working on my talk but also procrastinating quite a bit. I left to do some groceries and guess what... I had only a fleeting thought about how I would have been able to buy a pack at the store but didn't want to. It felt great. Then I thought about the $$ I have saved and will keep on saving and decided to treat myself. Instead of cigarettes I bought a cute little plant with some beautiful white flowers to put on my entrance table.
