Getting Ready to quit

I'm happy to meet you Daily Llama. Good for you! This addiction is probably little different from others you've rid yourself of. The one thing I would do to improve the odds of success in quitting is carefully prepare. The physical withdrawls can be very predictable but the emotional withdrawls are so varied from one person to the next and they often catch you by surprise. I know many did with me. I found the predictable elements far easier to deal with. The rest was an education. The program element here on the sight prepares you to deal with a wide variety of emotional withdrawls by giving you a solid foundation for strength and clarity when your mind tries to convince you that smoking is the answer to whatever. We know it's not the answer to anything but in the moment, when your mind is rationalizing, that truth may not be so clear making your strength not so high. The strength here is pure resolve. Good luck to you. I hope you have great success. Hi Dasiegrl and Marcus, Thanks for the support.... Marcus, thanks for the offer - I moved back to Canada from S.Africa in October to prepare the way for my wife and her two boys and I talk to her twice a day for a few minutes at a time and then spend a lot of time IM-ing her also. Dasie, save those cats from your smoke!! Hey DL, I just looked online to see how much those Chantix cost. Kinda pricey. I'm laid off from my job and gotta watch my $ or lack there of so guess I'll go with the patch and hope for the best. Good luck to you tho. You went 6 mo. that was pretty good. I can see how it happened that you started up again. I made it 3 mo. and found out my best friend, my dog had cancer and had to have her put to sleep. Didn't think I could do it without smokin about 3 cigs and that was the end of my quit there. So I'm gonna have to go through hell week again!! It's really great to have people here to chat with. I've only got 3 kitties now and they listen well but I think they would like it better if they didn't have to breathe in my smoke all day. And so it goes! Hang in there......... DL - we've had similar chequered pasts and professions. Plus, we're in the same time zone. If a fellow-quitter's mobile phone number would help, just ask. I'd be delighted to help in any way. Goofy and Grin, Thanks for taking the time to speak to me and encourage me even tho' I haven't even quit yet!! I'll go with the Orange Juice with Pulp for a while until I think I can handle coffee without salavering at the mouth for a smoke.... I'll probably be posting every time I get a twinge of craving during the first week of quitting... God knows it's been the ONLY constant in a very chequered life so far... Hi Dasiegrl, I'm three days into the Champix pill regime and the nausea has almost gone or is not so noticeable taken with food... I intend to quit on the morning of day 8, when I wake... I'll have cleared all the cigs and ashtrays and lighters into the garbage on the previous night. I only quit once before in 1985 with Smokenders ($500) and stopped smoking for 6 months. I started again in the most novel way - I was pissed drunk in a bar (during the bad old days when I was an alcohol abuser) and the guy next to me had the french cigarettes that I had been smoking for years before I quit... I asked for one in a drunken haze of 'heroism' and by midday next day I was hungover and smoking again.... So, I've smoked again for 23 years and my lungs are shot but they will recover a bit when I stop smoking and at least they won't get any worse... I'm not looking forward to the withdrawal and the cravings in the Hell Week but I have the Champix and this site when I get paniced! I wish you the best when you quit and keep posting here so we can head off into this advenure together... only thing that freaks me out about the patch is that you still have to wean yourself off it when you're all done not putting a cigarette into your mouth! I used it several times for 24 hour journeys from Africa to San Diego and to Montreal and it works fine ...but I was hardly outside the terminal doors before I was tearing off the patch and lighting up... I have enough cigs for another day or so ( of my 'favourite' brand) and then I'll buy Medallion or some "air" type packet of smokes to get me through to night before quit day... but, I tell you, even after only 3 days of the Champix/Chantix my cigs taste like crap!!! That is encouraging.... So, you're going to be my new Quit Buddy and Tresa is going to be my Experienced Alter Ego, as she's a commited QuitLady and a watchful eye on Newbies like you and me... Hi there DL,I'm new here, well second time around. This is a great place! I've smoked over 40 years also and quit at least 5 times but I'm hoping this is my last and successful try. Glad you're here and hope to chat with ya in the future. I'm gonna be using patches which worked for me before. Gotta do this!!! Hi Daily L, Welcome to Chantix/pix morning sickness! Be sure to take it with food especially in the mornings. I had to learn to eat breakfast again, which is not a bad habit to get into. The nausea should lighten up in a few days. One thing about caffeine, it has double the effect once you stop smoking. So a little goes a long way ;) Maybe a little tea or soda wouldn't hurt or cause a crave? :quest: all the best, G My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/21/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 174 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,220 Amount Saved: $835.20 Life Gained: Days: 17 Hrs: 22 Mins: 31 Seconds: 35
