New and Nervous

Suzie!! What is it about 36 years of smoking then quitting? I, too, had smoked 36 years..and as of 14 days ago, I am now smoke free! I have not "cheated", I have pretty much gone cold turkey, and I am still here, still sane. (a bit fuller from all the munching I have done in two weeks, but I am tackling that next)! You can do it! Always remember that there are lots of us here and I know for a fact that I could not have made it these past 2 weeks without the support I found here. Hang Tough, you can do it!! QUITTING WITH NICOTINE SUBSTITUTES

Non Smoking and NRT's: My husband and I both quit 2 weeks ago, he went Cold Turkey, I have used some nicotine gum. I can actually say that we have noticed no difference between us, we both are still not smoking (not to say we don't still feel the WANT to part of it)!, but we are not going to~~ ever again! I know we are past the physical cravings part, now on to the mental dependancy of withdrawal. I chew 1-3 pieces of gum a day, and somedays, none. But, if life is stressful,(I am a full time caregiver) I would much rather say that I am going to chew a piece of nicotine gum than "cheat" with a cigarette. And, yes, I do feel like a non SMOKER..I am replacing that nicotine, but I am not inhaling it into my lungs. If this is what it takes me, I will do it. The info on NRT pkg. says 12 weeks of treatment, with gradual cutdown of products, I am sure I will do it in less than that. And, I am not sure why people think the government owes NRTS to us free. Maybe if they would just take all the cigarettes off the market, the problem might just solve itself. Think any big-money lobbists in DC will let that happen?? NO, but I do not agree that every program has to be a free government program. We are big folks, we began smoking on own own, so lets just all put on our big girl panties and deal with our own mistakes! ;) Hang in There and Keep the Quit!!! Famous Qoutes from Famous Quitters

One more that I did not see, Anna, and it was one that I read the first day I joined this wonderful group. I am so sorry, I do not know who wrote it, so forgive me for not giving credit where credit is due, but this statement has been printed and hanging on my computer for the last two weeks. Whoever wrote this, know how much you have helped me during hell and heck week: "I would rather be an ex smoker occasionally thinking of smoking, than a smoker constantly thinking of quitting." Swinging Doors

Yeah, I had a few triggers this weekend too, but managed to NOT light up! I have had one cigarette in a pack for the past 2 weeks, just look at it longingly occasionally (LOL), and I had wanted it to be "there" as a token of my last cig. I looked and it was gone! PANIC!! I really started to panic...then I thought..what the heck is THAT all about? So, I examined my reasons for keep "just one" around and realized that the fact it was no longer here was about the best thing for me! And, the Super Bowl was a bit rough, but we stayed home and watched the game and had lots of healthy munchies to snack on, so we made it. My lab is 10 months old, close to 95 pounds and still all puppy energy, so that keeps me busy, thank goodness. Have a good one, Jazz..glad to know there are still a few of us January quitters staying quit!! In This World

Hey Susie Noticed you are an RN Don't you find it amazing the amount of health care professionals that still smoke? I am saying this from experience....and I know you can understand that. My daughter works at a local hospital and while it is a very stressful job, it still amazes me how many of the professionals still smoke. I wonder if they realize how apparent it is to the patients when they return back inside from their breaks? Good to have you aboard! QUITTING WITH NICOTINE SUBSTITUTES

Deck, you said: Does anybody really believe that tobacco manufacturers really do all in their power to repair the damages caused by their product? Nope~~no more so than the pharmacetucial companies want us to get well. They think we should continue on their meds till the day we die. I do think that however you do it; whatever works for you, is the right way to stop smoking....the stop part is the important part of the journey, how you get there is up to each of us as individuals. Looks like you are doing it, Deck..me too. Just "differnt strokes for different folks"..but we can all be proud of our accomplishments! Keep on keepin smoke free, Deck! Good to hear from you!
