Scared to Exercise?

Thank you Pamela for the encouragement and letting me know it wasn't that bad. I saw what she went threw and it really scared the heck out of me. I did read some info on IBS, and I really do think it is IBS. I am sure that is what it is. I remember when I was younger have attacks, just not so bad. But in the info I read it said that normally a person with IBS will have the diareha in the morning and that is exactly how it has been for me. Thanks again for all the info. Kerry

carebare, my husband had the endescope procedure and said it was no big deal. I had to have a colonoscopy this past summer to make sure everything was ok with my colon and it is no big deal either. I was terrified and felt really silly afterwards. If you are to frightened to be put to sleep, they now have the new virtual colonoscopy where you stay awake the whole time. It's kind of like an MRI and it's supposed to be more accurate in detecting abnormalities. Plus you don't have to drink that horrible laxative that puts you on the toilet for hours and hours. The more you fret and worry about what you have the worse it is going to get, once you see your doctor and they rule any problems out you'll feel so much better. Also, my doctor said for me to eat lots of fiber to help control my diahrrea and to avoid all fast food, fried foods, coffee and dairy products. Drink fibercon or metamucil everyday this also helps.

Hey carebear, Here's something I can help with. I've had 2 endoscopies, and they are nothing to worry about - AT ALL. I was so nervous before my first one that I cried before they gave me the drugs to knock me out. The second one was just as easy as the first. I don't know what happened to your m-i-l, but I think her experience was atypical. What happens is they give you either a sedative or a short-acting anesthesia - the procedure is like 1/2 hour. You wake up in recovery, and barring unforeseen circumstances you have no problems. The only thing I would caution you is that you can't eat after midnight the night before. If you are prone to tummy aches, be sure to schedule the test for the morning.

Thank you for your responce. My friend of a friend also has said it could be IBS and tried to explain it to me a little. I keep forgetting to look it up on the net. I am just really scared about going threw all these test. My mother-in-law just had the endoscope (I believe that is what it is called) anyways she said it was a horrible experience and she would never do it again. After what I saw her going threw just on the preparing for the procedure, brought me nightmares. Oddly enough I am the one who helped while she was stuck on the pot for more than 3 hours. She literally could not get off. She tried one time and my biggest fear happened to her. She was horribly embarrassed and all I could do is reasure her that it was ok and not to worry. She said if her life depending it on she would never have that procedure done again in her life. Of course this scared me silly and I have not told any of my doctors that I have had the runs for over a month now. I guess I am hoping that getting on something like zoloft or paxil will take away the problem even though I am scared it is something much worse. I just keep telling myself it is the anxiety, and I have to keep proving to myself it is the anxiety by looking for everything I kind find about agoraphobia and panic attacks. Again thank you so much for responding. This site has been wonderful. I guess it helps me to see that I am not alone. Everyone here has been so nice to me and this really does help. I only have my best friend and the friend of hers that is going threw this to, for support. My husband just isn't a supportive kind of person and doesn't understand any of this. He is very angry with me because I do not work. It hasn't made this situation any better that is for sure.

carebare, sounds like you might have IBS. I have it and that's how my anxiety was diagnosed because I had really bad gas pains, bloating ,nausea and diaherra. I went through alot of tests and everything came back normal so the Dr. figured it was anxiety related. I'm now taking zoloft and my stomach problems have gone away. About the exercise discussion going on here, I understand the fear and what it feels like to have breathing difficulities and heart palpitations, but excercise helps to alleviate anxiety and panic. I recently joined a gym and feel so much better mentally and physically. If you've recently had a physical and everything checked out ok give excercise a try. Maybe you could do yoga or pilates just avoid any aerobic excercise until your feeling better mentally.

Thank you for your reply. I don't know if I have GERD but I do have stomache problems. I often have upset stomaches and the runs. This has been very difficult for me because in stressfull situations I don't want to leave the house scared that I won't find a restroom or make to a restroom. I am also wondering if gas could be caused by my anxiety. It seems like I get real bad gas pains when I am somewhere I don't feel comfortable. Looking back this has been going on for years. I am just recently starting to see things thanks to a friend of a friends who also suffers from agoraphobia and anxiety. It is just so stressful. I use to be a very out going person and for some reason things have been getting worse for the last few years. your stressed out friend, carebare

Hiya carebear. Try not to worry. Take it one step at a time, one activity at a time. I too often feel like I can't breathe. Do you have GERD or stomach problems? I do, and I think it makes it worse. Posture training helps sometimes. Like you I'm also pretty nervous alot since all this started for me. I don't even really have a diagnosis yet, and that's very hard - I always wonder what's happening when I get any little pain or flutter. I don't know if you practice any particular religion, but I find that it helps to meditate on it at night and in the morning. I hope we all get better soon, but until then I think the key is to seek help and support wherever and however you can.

I am also scared to excercise, as it is I gasp for air almost all day long. Sometimes I think this has to be more than just an anxiety attack/panic attack. Sometimes I feel like I am going crazy because I can't seem to catch my breath. If I was to get on a bike or something that is really scary to think of. Somedays I am ok with mild panic attacks, but the last couple of days have been really really hard

Thanks so much for letting me know I'm not alone. I had to run some errands today, so I had to walk around a bit. I'm telling you, I thought I was going to collapse. I had a stress echo when my symptoms were at their worst - in the beginning - AND I have had symptoms while doing absolutely nothing. So I don't know how this foolishness entered my head. SMILEY, you wanna know, do ya? Hmph. The FDA is now requiring a warning label be placed on some of the more popular anti-depressants indicating that they increase suicidal tendencies in some people. They said that the reason they're doing this is b/c so many non-psych MD's are prescribing the meds, that they're not completely aware that this is something they should watch for. Did I mention that the psych I'm seeing decided to prescribe them for me LAST WEEK? AND did I mention my reluctance to take them? This is not helping. At all. Whatever.

OK, I have to know. What did the news report say about anti-depressants?
