Scared to Exercise?

21 years ago 0 54 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi Lawchick, I had the same problem exercising too. I actually had a panic attack a few weeks back while walking which has triggered off my agoraphobia again. (Although instead of staying in the panic and dealing with it, recognising that it wasn't going to hurt me, I bolted down the road to my car!!) I think its hard to exercise because the symtoms we have when having a panic attack are the same as when we exercise eg: heart rate speeds up, body temperature increases, sweating etc. I personally think its all about what you tell yourself. Its very normal for these things to happen to the body when we're exercising, we just associated it with panic and stop for fear of going into a panic attack. So your not alone I've had the same problem, I just try to tell myself I'm not panicking and that its normal for my body to have those symptoms when I'm exercising, sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Hi Lawchick, I had the same problem with exercising too. I used to go to the gym and have a panic attack once my heart rate increased. I was so scared, that I stopped going to the gym. Speak to your doctor regarding your concerns on medication. I personally felt that they didnt work for me, but other people on here feel that they do. Your doctor will help you decide what is best for you. Have you started the panic program? Take care and let us know how you are doing.

I was wondering if I'm the only one who's scared to exercise or get my heart rate up. This is a bad vicious cycle - I'm getting out of shape, so when I walk around, I feel like I'm going to faint. I think I'm still worried there's something medically wrong with me. I posted last night about how the docs want me to take meds - they think it'll confirm if I have anxiety. There was this report on the news about anti-depressants. I won't repeat what it said, but I'm nervous about it. I'm worried the meds will make me feel worse, or that I won't be able to get off.
