Cool! My DH started chewing "magic" gum last night. He smells so good today and his pretty warm blue eyes are brighter. He's doing well. Lots of yawning and throat clearing. Hopefully he'll desire to join the board here and reap the benefits.
He must have made the decision when I told him how much better sex is as a non-smoker!!! I know what makes him tick...
Kiwi,
I love him far too much to dish out to him what his addiction gave to me. It's just an "evil and satisfying thought" but not suitable for reality. I'm too much of a wus to actually do something like that.
I love being smoke-free and have had two good days in a row! Thanks for being here all who see this!

I think the secret is "thinking it through". Those who think it through to the end each time they think about smoking won't light up.
Also, a lot of relapse happens to people who drop out of their support groups. I, personally, will spend the rest of my life around nicotine addicts - in recovery or out of recovery is the difference. I hope to spend my life among recovering nic. addicts rather than those who still smoke.
To anwser the subject question:
No, I don't fear that someday I'll smoke again, because all I can see is today. And today I won't smoke.
Thanks for the post, Joe. I think it's important to look at the lasting effects of addiction. Brain imprints never go away. The good, bad and ugly that one experiences never exits the brain.

I have two families:
My adopted family: Mom started smoking in her late teens and never smoked heavily, quit when she was 40 (35 yrs. ago). She has no smoking related health problems. Dad smoked and died of stomach cancer at age 60. My oldest daughter, 20, smokes lightly (<5/day) and is trying to quit. None of my other children smoke.
My birth family: Mother smoked from early teens to 51 (quit 3 yrs.). She was diagnosed with emphysema at 48. Over half of her 15 siblings smoke and many have smoking related health problems - several have died and one recently lost a leg. Both of my grandparents died of lung disease. All of my half-siblings smoke. I don't know if it makes any difference, but the family has lived in Virginia (tobacco country) since the 1600's. Social norm?
That's my family!

Give yourself a pat on the back for quitting! It's not easy, but YOU CAN do it because a lot of other people have done it.
I think it helps to dring lots of water and keep busy - yesterday I washed my car and did some yard clean up. That kept my mind off of the matter for a while in a safe environment.
Stick around, this is a great place to quit!

Hey,
Just wanted to share some experience, strength and hope with weight conscious newbies.
I gain 6 lbs. total. Stopped gaining on day 24 and have begun to lose now.
I haven't been in my quit long enough to feel I can afford to really focus on losing weight - the weight loss is happening without my conscious effort.
Good news!

Leigh,
Yep! It posted correctly.
Your story touched me as well. I'm a stay-at-home mom and homeschool three of my four children.
Valentine's Day and my wedding anniversary are next week and that really has me in the dumps. My husband smokes and of course we've always been smoking buddies. He booked a weekend getaway for this weekend to celebrate and I told him I couldn't go because I didn't have a lot of confidence in my ability to stay smoke-free. He was angry and disappointed. I can really understand his point of view, but I had to do that to protect my quit. That was the right thing for me to do. I'm still sad, though.
Then I found out this morning that he's leaving for Nashville next week and won't even be here for our anniversary. He'll be hanging with the pretty & talented in Nashville while I'm here breaking up the fights between the kids, cleaning up the dinner dishes, wiping muddy dog footprints off the floor, running the taxi service, withdrawaling from drug addiction...well...you know what it's like.
I'm just so mad and so sad at the same time - and lonely.
Yesterday was good, but today I just want to cry again. That must mean that tomorrow will be good! I'd love to go to bed and stay there until it's tomorrow. But that's not an option. Instead I'll drink LOTS of water, dance wildly and go do some yardwork.
Listen to the people at this site. They sure have me convinced that things will get better. They are telling me about the light at the end of the tunnel - they've been there to see it.

Yeah, eating helps me. I like Red Vines. Drink lots and lots of water, too. I keep my drink bottle next to me at all times and when I'm uncomfortable I chug like a maniac. Then I feel much better.
Arwensmom could be onto something regarding the patch. I chose oral NRT for the same reason - control. I know what it feels like to have too much nic. Like 5 shots of espresso!
Try the suggestions that people offer.
