I know you don't prefer AA, but AA meetings are available on Cruises. I went on my first Cruise after i entered AA, though i did not attend a meeting there, there was a member from the same group that was also on the cruise. It was assuring to see each other while on the Cruise. By then I had started to work on the program so I was able to enjoy the trip with ease.

A DRUNK FELL IN A HOLE AND COULDN?T GET OUT

A DRUNK FELL IN A HOLE AND COULDN'T GET OUT

A businessman went by. The drunk called out for help. The businessman
threw him some money and told him, "Get yourself a ladder." But the drunk
could not find a ladder in this hole he was in.

A doctor walked by. The drunk said, "Help, I can't get out." The
doctor gave him drugs and said, "Take this, it will relieve the pain," The
drunk said thanks, but when the pills ran out, he was still in the hole.

A renowned psychiatrist rode by and heard the drunk's cries for help,
He stooped and said, "How did you get there? Were you born there? Were you
put there by your parents? Tell me about yourself, it will alleviate your
sense of loneliness." So the drunk talked with him for an hour, then the
psychiatrist had to leave, but he said he'd be back next week. The drunk
thanked him, but he was still in his hole.

A priest came by. The drunk called for help. The priest gave him a
Bible and said I'll say a prayer for you. He got down on his knees and
prayed for the drunk, then left. The drunk was very grateful, he read the
Bible, but he was still stuck in that hole.

A recovering alcoholic happened to be passing by. The drunk cried out,
"Hey, help me, I'm stuck in this hole." Right away, the recovering
alcoholic jumped in the hole with him. The drunk said, "What are you doing?
Now we're both stuck here." But the recovering alcoholic said, "It's okay,
I've been here before, I know how to get out."

A DRUNK FELL IN A HOLE AND COULDN?T GET OUT

First I am very grateful to AHC for letting me promote AA here and secondly what ever i am posting is for people who are looking to quit drinking altogether. I totally understand people who don't want to quit and want to moderate. One humble request is that they read the book called Alcoholics Anonymous and read the Doctors Opinion and More about Alcoholism chapters. The book is freely available online.

Like somebody pointed out most of the people who have drinking problem are close to being functional alcoholics. I could totally relate to that. Before joining AA i would not have imagined I being an alcoholic because financially to some extent emotionally not hit a severe bottom. What convinced me was the theory and illustrations included in the book. And then being convinced I embraced the program.

What is there to loose to just read the book?

A DRUNK FELL IN A HOLE AND COULDN?T GET OUT

Unfortunately I am not sure if this forum has a feature where we could send private messages to members. If it helps i a member of another on-line forum. You may google for E-AA. And look for Discussion Forum section. There will be many dedicated members including me, who will be very willing to help you out.

I need support from others who understand :(

"it is the disease you think you don't have anymore"

There is a story in the book called Alcoholics Anonymous, where a Car Salesman (dry at that time) goes to the countryside looking for prospective car buyers, here it goes:

On the way I felt hungry so I stopped at a roadside place where they have a bar. I had no intention of drinking. I just thought I would get a sandwich. I also had the notion that I might find a customer for a car at this place, which was familiar for I had been going to it for years. I had eaten there many times during the months I was sober. I sat down at a table and ordered a sandwich and a glass of milk. Still no thought of drinking. I ordered another sandwich and decided to have another glass of milk.

"Suddenly the thought crossed my mind that if I were to put an ounce of whiskey in my milk it couldn't hurt me on a full stomach. I ordered a whiskey and poured it into the milk. I vaguely sense I was not being any too smart, but I reassured as I was taking the whiskey on a full stomach. The experiment went so well that I ordered another whiskey and poured it into more milk. That didn't seem to bother me so I tried another."

Thus started one more journey to the asylum for Jim. Here was the threat of commitment, the loss of family and position, to say nothing of that intense mental and physical suffering which drinking always caused him. He had much knowledge about himself as an alcoholic. Yet all reasons for not drinking were easily pushed aside in favor of the foolish idea that he could take whiskey if only he mixed it with milk!

===================================================================================

This is what AA calls Obsession of the mind. That queer thought it will be ok to take Whiskey with Milk.. and then the physical allergy kicks in, where he orders the next and the next... then ends up in the hospital.

~m

Hello ~m,
I appreciate your honesty and courage to come forward and tell your story. I see you been to treatment centers and I know you already mentioned that you were part of AA and didn't work for you. May I ask if you had a sponsor who walk you through the 12 steps of AA? Just going to several meetings is not going to keep an alcoholic sober. Unfortunately modern AA has been infiltrated with many Hard Drunks who simply propagate the message of attending meetings to fight against this disease. Unfortunately for a real alcoholic, we need what the doctor calls it a psychic change (as stated in the Doctors Opinion).

Nobody is a failure under the universe. People just try do the best. On the anonymity issues, i totally agree, we got to be very diligent when picking a sponsor. Our book suggests look for a tight lipped person. It could be outside AA, your close friend/priest/psychologist...

I?m tired

Clarence,
Please do so, go to a meeting. It is the best thing you could do for you and your family. Many lives and families have been restored back to normalcy once a person puts down the drink and seeks a spiritual path.

Just wanted to say hi

Life has been good.  About a month ago, I had a slip at a party.

Thats the baffling nature of this beast. When you think you have this under control, it strikes us. Very cunning, baffling and powerful.
