Hey Irish, Welcome aboard, you will meet all sorts of interesting people here. Shouldn't take you long to find out I don't sugar coat anything. Quitting smoking is a pain, but you will get through it. Expect the worst and hope for the best. Yeah those cravings will come up and bite you now and again. Just got to put them in their place. Remember YOU call the shots, not the tobacco companies! If you smoke you basically reset your craving counter in your brain. When you quit remember NOT ONE PUFF again EVER! You need to be fully committed to quitting for this to work. Be sure to write down WHY you want to quit, this will be your safety net for when your mind starts saying, just one! Also, read and download the stuff that the SCC has put together, it was designed by experts, some of it you probably already know but reading it again is paramount to your success. Search the web for a few shocking videos on the subject of quit smoking if you feel you need that slap in the face! All combined, along with the wonderful people here you will get through this just fine. If you feel you are going to slip up, before you do, come to this board and post under cravings, someone will respond! Good luck! Happy Birthday, Irish! You've come to the right place, and what a great birthday present to give yourself. Take this journey one crave at a time, no more, no less. It DOES get better with time, just keep the focus. And post here, it really helps. Irish, I am rather new here myself, but I thought I might be able to offer some advice. The first week nicotine free was hard, but not impossible. I have been drinking TONS of water. I am in the restroom every 30 minutes! Everytime I think about smoking I drink some water. Somehow it has helped. Also, I get on here and look at my milage like ten times a day. It's so cool to see what I have accomplished! You can do anything you set your mind to. It is true what they say, "where there is a will there is a way"! Good luck! I never see anyone on the instant messenger, maybe we can arrange to meet up on there sometime. Irish For me this has been a mind bend extrodinare...Smokers are masters of rationalization and junkie thinking...There is really no logic to the addiction, which is why by its very nature it is open to a wide variety of excuses as to why it should be continued...BUT there is hope...And that hope is to begin to understand the thoughts behind the thoughts that keep us sucking down 4000 chemicals every hour of the day... Here is an example of the irrationality of the addiction...Who in their right mind stands on a street corner enduring frigid temperatures with a gale blowing in the face, sucking down smoke, all the while believing that a wonderful time is being had by all...WE DID... An addiction that can drive a body to that length is deeply embedded in the mind, the emotions and one's outlook...That is why, I believe, that you must quit from the inside out...This is far more than the cessation of the act of smoking, it is the beginning of a new way of being. It is essentially an exercise in behaviour motification...Not am easy thing for us addicts, but very very possible as long as the desire to quit is stronger than the desire to smoke... So get ready, you sound like your up for the ride...There are any number of people who will invest in your efforts, all you need do is ask... nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 213 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,390 Amount Saved: $1,491.00 Life Gained: Days: 38 Hrs: 23 Mins: 21 Seconds: 49

Wow! Thank you all for your responses to me! You all seem to be giving the same words of wisdom, so I've moved my quit day up to Saturday the 28th. I am reading the material and studing it, as you all who have been there, suggest. I know that, from past experience trying to quit, that it's not going to be my body that I battle with but my mind. Or should I say my thoughts. Those are the tough ones. My "thinking" is what usually gets me. They usually try to rationalize why it would be alright to have one...like, "come on, you have this strong urge to have a cigarette and all your doing is thinking about having one, so have one and get the urge under control". Thoughts like that. Do, did any of you have those?? How do you get through them??? Any suggestions??? (I'm still reading so if these are in the study program, I might not have gotten to them yet). Again, thanks for all the welcome and wisdom shared by you all. Oh yeah, Darpel....she's right, that is a pretty scary avatar!
