Work - Social and Smoke Breaks

hey kiwi - i agree with rusty - it's important to take breaks, especially now you don't want to deprive yourself and become bitter with this quit.... do you have to take your breaks at a scheduled time? perhaps for the first little while it may help to vary the time of day, since you are no longer dictated by nicodemon as to when to feed the addiction! I work from home, so i make my own breaks, but I too have stopped going outside (use to sit on the patio, read a magazine or book and smoke for 10 minutes). Now I either play with the cats, make a cup of tea and surf this site, or go bug my husband (who also works from home). You may come up with your own type of "break" and it may not resemble what you use to do, but that's OK. Just reward yourself with getting away from working. You deserve it! Feelin' Funny (NOT "ha ha!" funny)

hey gps - i "kicked the nic" two weekends ago and went thru a condensed version of Hell Week" in about 3 days - it was brutal. I wasn't able to sleep, concentrate, I felt out of sorts and generally very cranky...... But, I did find that by Day 3 (about the middle of the day) I was getting back to my "normal" self - cravings became manageable and I wasn't ready to rip someone's head off hang in there - you've pretty much made it! Its great to be back!

Elaine - I think finding a local support group is a fantastic idea, but don't forget you are doing this for YOURSELF. Everyone has a reason which is personal to their own quit. Finding others in the same boat is a good idea, but their way of handling the situation probably won't work for you unless you are committed to this quit. NRT's won't work unless you are committed. Cold Turkey won't work unless you are committed. Hypnosis won't work unless you are committed. Cold Laser Therapy, Wellbutrin, Zyban, none of these will work unless you are committed..... I think you get the picture...good luck! Junkie thoughts????

Punkin.........don't fret. I'm not sure how far along in your quit you are right now, but Katy and Butterfly hit it on the head. You can't compare what you go thru early in your quit to what happens as you get use to not smoking. I read that you pretty much have to go a year before you are "retrained" to handle different situations without cigarettes. Thru all of the seasons, birthdays, holidays, etc. And even then, a very stressful situation may cause a crave to come rushing back. But, by then, you really don't WANT to smoke. It's just a thought of smoking.......not too much punch behind it. UNLESS you allow it. And that's the big part. Butterfly used a good example - you can't "make love" to the crave. You have to banish it. And that goes for an early crave, or one that hits you after you have been quit for a month or a year or two......If you allow the thought to stay there, you will drive yourself insane, and you are feeding the crave what it wants. Your attention. After 40 days of not smoking, I am stopping the patch. Just decided today to not put it on. That's a huge step for me, and I'm prepared with a patch if it doesn't work. But so far, I have been able to talk myself out of the niggle craves I have been getting, and I stocked up on veggies today. (got some chocolate too, don't tell anyone though) The craves do go away. Trust us.............they do. How I've stayed off them...

thanks for the insight, Peter........ you're right - when you think of all of the places we were allowed to smoke....anywhere in our homes (if we chose to), our cars (made mine into a portable donut shop, since I wasn't allowed to have my smoke and coffee inside!) So.....we have a lot of routine to break. There are the fortunate ones who did not smoke in the house, or the car. Perhaps meals are their trigger (try to stop THAT habit ;) Bottom line is, you have to expect the crave and be prepared for it.... Congrats on your own quit - awesome job - and welcome.....glad to see you posting!
