Stuck? How can we help?

My worst symptoms of anxiety and depression are triggered by stressful events. So I think that what helps me dealing with my response to this stressful events could help me also to get better.

Helpful!

Right now I am on session 4 of the program and what I have found the most useful was the challenge worksheets as well as posting here on the forums.

I am still working on the goals worksheet but I am already imagining that working on treatment goals could be the most rewarding experience of this program.

Coping with Workplace bullying

Hello Hugs4u. Last year I dealt with bullying at work and was one of the worst experiences in my life. The bullying was the principal reason for having a nervous breakdown and was in sick leave for 2 months. After this period I could not work and took a license from my job and after 7 months of the breakdown I am still not working.
The good news is that after beginning the license I enrolled in a university course giving some time to study and think in other aspects of life.

Communication with family and friends

From my experience communicating about mental health with family and friends could be very frustrating, and in my opinion is an waste of time. It is better to share our anxiety and depression thoughts with people who understand it like here on this forums or an adequate therapist.

The best thing to do is for us is to help ourselves to get better so we have healthier relationships with family and friends.

ear ringing?

Three years ago I got tinnitus and it is an overwhelming experience at that time. I got a trauma because of tinnitus and it took an year to conquer this trauma. Tinnitus could be caused by numerous factors and as Ashley suggested it is necessary to consult an health care professional.

In my case tinnitus was due to loud noises because if riding a bicycle (harley-davidson) without using ear plugs protection and I have some suspects that the panic disorder help a lit also for the development of tinnitus. What had helped with tinnitus was a wonderful online support group that I joined at that time.

Working on Treatment Goals - A Big Challenge

I am in session 4 and this is a very challenge session for me. I also understand that is one of most useful sessions of this program. Even the fact of thinking and writing down possible treatment goals cause me anxiety.

Now I am developing the treatment goals and I am seeing that this will take me more time than expected. One of the goals that I have is to be around places that reminds me my old job (where I had a nervous breakdown) and I already developed an exposure plan for this goal.

Another treatment goal is to deal with stressful situations. My worst anxiety and depression episodes are triggered by stressful situations or thoughts. I am developing an exposures plan for this goal and I need to be careful to not expose myself to very stressful situations until I get better.

Iam so afraid right now!!!!!!!

What works for me on these situations is to write on the challenge worksheet (provided on the CBT program) when I have some anxious thoughts as well as keeping a journal and posting on these forums.

If you stick with CBT activities things will get better soon or later. The key is having patient with ourselves and living the present.

Session 1 Walkthrough

The main challenge in this session is how one gets organized so she to do all the CBT activities and do not skip any step. If other anxiety people are like me, I get overwhelmed when I have many things to do leading to an increase in my anxiety and in this way getting frustrating because I am not able to do anything. So, the key here is moderation: one should get organized so she can do the CBT activities presented on this program but on the other hand this should be a basic organization so it leaves some room for unexpected situations.

What worked for me was to create a file on the notepad called CBT. In this file I write the CBT activities that I have to do do review as needed. As CBT activities are always changing I try to update this file so it can be a road-map every time I need it.

We need to develop some time management tools and the health educators here are always referring this on the forums. We could learn to use some time management tools in this program as this will be very useful in other aspects of our lives.

Right now I know if we are prepared to work through this program there is no other way than for us to get better.

Started Treatment with a New Therapist - My Experience

I have been suffering with depression and anxiety for at least the last 7 years and last year I had a nervous breakdown. This was a signal that I must change something in my life but I did not know what I needed to change. I started visiting a therapist 8 months ago to help me get the answers I need but now I just made a balance of the therapy and arrived at the conclusion that this therapy didn’t help me at all (I was in talk therapy). This was more evident when I started the CBT online program here about 1 month ago, as well as starting posting on these forums, and already feel an improvement more than all the talk therapy combined.

As I think I need to consult a health care professional to help me with these issues, I found a new therapist which I went for the first consult yesterday. I do not know if it will work but I will give a try and must remember that people are not perfect (even a therapist!) In this consult the therapist talked more than me and explained the process of the treatment.

The first part of the treatment is to know myself: questioning who I am, what I do, what I think, why I dress in a certain way, etc. In this part I will also discover the genetics heredity from my parents and what behaviors they had that could have had an influence on my own behaviors.

The second part of the treatment is more practical. The therapist said to me that the first part is essential and it is the baseline for all the treatment. In this second part we will deal with behaviors and how they affect me. I will need to have a balance in my life and need to have other activities besides work. Other important activities are hobbies, exercise and interpersonal relationships. The therapist said that these activities are essential and people who have it are less probable of developing mental health problems. The therapist emphasized the development of interpersonal relationships as one of the most important activities.

The third part of the treatment is when I will start diminishing the medication dosage and the monitoring of symptoms associated with it.

It is all for now and I hope to write what I will learn from each session with my new therapist on this forums, so other people could be helped also.

Session 4 Walkthrough

So far this was the most difficult session for me, choosing fears and creating an exposition plan.

I have several fears and I include here 1) being in places that remember my older job (where I had a nervous breakdown) 2) dealing with stressful situations and multitask activities 3) several activities that I usually avoid in a daily basis.

I create for each of this fears an exposition plan with activities that were ranked between 30 and 80 (in a scale of 0-100). Most of the days I am choosing 1 or 2 activities and fill the Exposure Tracker Worksheet

It is a lot of work but I am feeling much better than when I started this program.
