Panic attacks in the middle of the night!

I usually have panic attacks when I am asleep. I fall asleep and a while later wake up with a full blown attack. Anyone else experiences this? What could it be related to?

Fear of the dentist

Me too! I get really panicky and usually end up cancelling or deciding that I do not need the work after all, I will just live with the pain as it is better than living with the fear!!!! As with any of these things, avoidance is not the answer - we all know that!

hello from Brighton!

I am Moochela and have had panic attacks since I was a child, so about 30 yrs or so. I am fed up with them!! So am trying to do something about it by doing this work. I do not let them affect my life too much but it means that I do spend a large amount of my time feeling "ill", or anxious so it is time to change now. I mainly get panic attacks in the middle of the night, for the past year or so now but hardly ever in the day. Would be good to have some buddies to chat to for moral support so if anyone out there wants to get in touch let me know :)

Personal Question (being romantic)

I have the same problem and have been wondering if it is part of the whole avoidance thing! I avoid many things that can make me feel unconfortable and although I like sex and have a loving husband, I feel tense and can not relax so again I avoid it as it is easier. Lately I have stopped avoiding and have just been doing it regardless. It is usually enjoyable and in the long run it may have more positive effects. I find avoiding sex creates more anxiety for myself and in the relationship which is not good for anybody! And you may also find it relaxing which is a bonus. You are not alone.....

oh man oh man!

Hi Diva Hope you are feeling better now! Do not be so hard on yourself! at least you are aware of your actions and what is going on so perhaps next time you will be able to stop a little sooner? Talk to your friend, most people understand and can be a great source of support and we are always here as well. :)

I understand exposure work but what should I do when attacks seem unrelated to anything?

I tend to get them at night so how can I best challenge them? I am asleep then I wake up with an awful attack! I hug a hot water bottle now which I find really soothes me, then I practice dance steps in my mind and focus on my dance classes which I really enjoy. I breathe and tell myself that it will pass and that everything I am feeling is not dangerous. Anything else I could be doing? My main fears are that I am going to die and am going to loose control, ie the attack will get bigger and bigger and take over me!

Thank goodness for this site

Welcome. This is my second week here and I am already benefitting and hope you will too. I have had panic attacks for the past 22 years and sometimes been panic free but hardly ever anxiety free. I have not let it stop me doing things but I do spend a lot of time feeling anxious and unwell instead! I am going through a particularly bad period at the moment and this site has really helped me to control my attacks and I hope it will help you too. We are all here together so keep in touch and add me to your bussy list if you like. All the very best. :)
