Hello.

Hello to you all, from Quebec Canada.

My goal is simple, to cut down to a reasonable pace.

Myth or Fact

Lots of  friends told me I drink too much, or more than I should. Only, it's always after the fact. The one's I drink with don't tell me that when we're sharing a beer or a glass of wine (after another...). They always offer me another one unless I've really drank too much. They've insisted several times that I stay over or call a cab, to their credit. At my age, I always follow that advice. Wasn't always the case, though....

I was at a business lunch where my vis à vis told me he drinks a bottle of wine every night with his wife. Isn't that more than recommended? Never crossed my mind to tell him.

Christmas Parties

I guess everyone has their own approach or strategies to deal with X-Mas parties, depending on their goals and management of urges.

My goal is to cut down, preferably to 2 drinks per day, max. I'm doing pretty well so far.

But the prospect of going to X-Mas parties has haunted me for the last week. In the past, I've either gotten sloshed or avoided them altogether so as not to get sloshed.

I have no choice this year because in one instance, I'm the new chairman of the board and in another, office parties are sacred because I'm a professional with staff to respect at this time of the year, as always through the year. I always regretted not going in the recent past and now I have no choice but to "show appreciation".

So here's my strategy: as chairman I'll only arrive at 8PM, well after the supper. As chairman, I CAN'T get pissed... simple as that.

For my office party, I've decided to bring along my ukulele and entertain. Since I love my ukulele, I won't get drunk because I don't want to smash it. I'll also be alert because I have to entertain and make sure no one else smashes my ukulele. And I've got to bring back my ukulele intact.

I know, I know, this is far from truly noble goals like abstaining for self-respect or to demonstrate sheer willpower, but I think it'll work. Beside's I won't get my uke smashed (or smash it myself).

So, what do you think?

Halloween Party?

Anybody have any ideas concerning X-Mas parties, the sort that we cannot avoid for professional reasons???

I thought of: arriving real late and in another case, entertaining (so gotta stay sober).

Someone suggested leaving early, real early, after speaking to everyone.

Christmas Parties

Yeah, foxman, what Dr Silkworth describes is what I feel like when I get into that cycle. That's what I'm trying to avoid and I think that I'm doing rather well. But the X-Mas parties had me worried about a trigger - like I'd start all over again. I'm usually reasonable but oftenin the past, I just could not stop drinking after the first one.

Tonight, I decided not to go. Yes it's very cold outside - cold spree - and that was a good pretext but I don't think it was a good idea for me to go. For tomorrow's party I'll have my ukulele, so I'm not as worried.

I really wanna avoid the trigger situation because I know that once started, I find a way to continue the next day, starting at noon, and then a glass or two at supper and then a porto (several) after supper and on and on... until remorse gets the better of me. Then I stop for a few days until the next trigger...

Samantha, that's a good idea, the one about having after-party plans. Several yaers ago I remember asking my wife to pick me up at a certain time during my X-Mas party, so I wouldn't drive drunk. Anyhow, this year, I'm gonna play my uke and my pride will keep me in check.

Cheers and thanks for the feedback. Oh, and Happy Holidays.

Christmas Parties

Failed.

Really flunked this test. You see, I played ukulele while sipping my 2nd glass, a good hour and a half into the party. Sang about a half dozen X-Mas songs. But then, ukulele back in it's case, I took another glass, and then another... Piled into a cab with the gang and went to a nightclub for more...

This morning, had a hangover. I don't even recall my last hangover...

Back to square one.

Christmas Parties

foxman, that makes me think: I usually buy a six pack that I keep for the weekend. Well, usually by Saturday afternoon, it's all gone... Sometimes I'll go get another one but usually, I just sulk because I haven't any on Sunday. Then I open a bottle of wine for supper...

Ashley, the easy answer is "just don't go". But sometimes, that's not possible for me. Next test is Tuesday the 22nd: band practice (I play bass - and uke - for Jack Lavoie. Check out his music at jacklavoie.net. That's a shameless plug...). For the last few months, I've actually limited myself to two beers each practice night. But this time, I anticipate pressure because while it's still band practice, it'll be much more like  Christmas Jam party. The beer is always on Jack so I can't bring my own as a strategy. I think I'll tell the guys that I have work the next day but knowing myself all too well, I'm pretty sure I'll just tell them I'm cutting down so as not to become an alcoholic (and kill the party!!! Just kidding.).

I'll report back, that's for sure.

Managing Family Stress Over the Holidays

This is a great thread. I don't have anything to offer though, but learning to accept others' ways and behaviours really changed my outlook on things, including my family. Sometimes, "the power to change" must make way to "accepting what we can't change".

The other thing is convincing others to accept. That way you try not toget caught in the crossfire.

Oh, and my kids are always arguing. I try to conceal my laughter...

crying inside

Hey redfox, good job. I'm having a bit of trouble keeping on the rails. I'll definitely think of you and your success as I strive to gain some kind of control.

I'm also paranoid about getting arrested for DUI.

Just seems like I take so much pleasure in having more and more drinks... 'till the morning after, that is.

Oh and Happy Holidays to all. It's snowed a plenty where I live and it really feels and looks like Holiday time!!! The kids are super excited and this whole forum is keeping me rather upbeat. Thanks, y'all, and have a great Holiday.
