Mind Playing Games?

Hello,

I am on day 4 of quitting and the main problem I keep running into is that for some reason my brain keeps trying to tell me I am going to miss smoking! Im not sure if I am going crazy but I will see something on tv about going to a beach and my brain will go "Whats the point if you can't smoke there, you will just get burnt" and I have had several of these things pop in my head. Almost like my brain is telling me I will never enjoy anything without it.

Has this happened to anyone else?! Is it normal? Its driving me insane and I need to know how long it may last.

Mind Playing Games?

Thank you Timbo637, I was a smoker for 17 years. I have tried quitting before however only lasted 7 hours. This is the longest I have gone and it may be out of fear (had a medical scare) they found a blood clot in my lung. They said its not severe and was cause by my birth control however it still terrified me.

My biggest worry is that once the fear is gone and I am better will the nicotine win and say you miss me. Like would I have quit if this didn't happen? That is my biggest fear :(

Mind Playing Games?

Hi Ashley,

Thank you I think I am on Day 10 now and the cravings are actually worse then they were... I have been a emotional mess especially with the different medications my doctor has me on. Very unstable at times :( I know this isn't going to be a instant gratification thing however if it just keeps getting worse and worse I'm not sure if I will make it cold turkey.

Mind Playing Games?

Hi Tim,

I guess its the pressure I feel that is making it worse. I feel like if I don't do this or if I mess up everyone who is rooting for me will be upset. I am definitely a people pleaser. I found I get depressed sometimes from this but I eventually can pull myself out of it. I just hope this doesn't continue and will subside earlier rather than later. However I am now 17 days smoke free and just trying to take it one day at a time. I realize I am only human and can't be perfect but I will try as hard as I can and if I mess up I will try try again until it sticks!

Mind Playing Games?

Hi Ashley,

If it comes down to it and I need the quit aids I will do it. I really wanted to go cold turkey, though I'm not sure why maybe to prove something to myself? However, I will ride this rollercoaster as long as I can! My reward system for myself has gotten a little out of hand lol I have begun an obsession with the leggings from LuLaRoe. However, once I get to a month I will reward myself with a detail cleaning of the inside of my car, to make sure all the smell is out. If I make it to 6 months I promised myself a new tattoo or an apple watch because I would have saved over $650. Right now I'm just trying to save money where I can so it makes it harder to reward.

smoking while driving

I have the same problem with smoking in the car. It's been 3 weeks for me since I quit and I found substituting my craving with a mint or piece of sugar free candy helps. I am just trying to train my brain to think differently about my day to day activities. I also do not think it's weird your mom doesn't know, I haven't told anyone at my job I smoke since I started working there because of fear of judgement. Hang in there I am as well!

Craving Same Time Everyday?

I don't know if anyone else goes through this but I find that I have my worst craving and weakest moment at the same time everyday. 5pm - 8 or 9pm is when I am at my worst. There is no reason for that because it wasn't like I did anything special at that time... Im not sure what to make of it, all I know is its getting harder and harder not easier. Im getting into more fights with my boyfriend and just being all around depressed. I just want these feelings to go away because Im trying so hard to be strong but it just keeps eating at me.

Craving Same Time Everyday?

I decided that my "Trigger Time" is going to be my time at the Gym. I have a membership and never really go so this will give me something to do while getting healthy! I also decided as one of my rewards to get a Spotify Premium membership that way I can listen to music at the gym :) Each day is hard but I'm happy to say I am now over a month smoke free!

I just dumped my tobacco again.

Congratulations! It was very hard for me the first couple of days (It did help I was sick so I just went with it). I guess since I am still new to this myself the best advice I can give is to constantly stay busy the first couple of weeks. I found that if I was cleaning and organizing my house I wasn't thinking about it. For the first couple of weeks I could not relax because once I relaxed I would think and crave.

Now however its been over a month and I am finding I can start to relax and enjoy tv and movies again. However if a feeling creeps up I will find something productive to do. The other thing I am going to start incorporating into my day to day is working out I feel if I am working on myself and I see results maybe it will give me a physical change along with my mental change.

Hang in there and I am here if you need me :)

anger and fury related to quitting

The best thing I have ever done and what I truly believe has helped me with quitting is I saw my General Doctor and asked to try anxiety medication. I have gone years trying to cope with anxiety to the point where I started developing OCD problems. For instance, I found I would wash my hands 45 times a day because I was scared of getting sick and I didn't think they were clean enough. Or I had to leave a room a certain way or I thought something bad would happen.

Anyway, they put me on Zoloft 50mg to start and see if it would help. I can not explain to you the difference it has made in my life! I also did this a month before I quit smoking and found I think it truly helped me to quit. When I did quit I found my anxiety came back a little so my doctor said I could go up to 100mg until I felt comfortable and he could bring it back down to 50mg

Now I wanna state Zoloft has no nicotine in it so I do not consider it a nicotine replacement. However, I did find it helped me with depression symptoms and keep my anxiety at its normal level.
