Sharp pain in the head

19 years ago 0 45 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi there, I had full numbness in both my arms the first time I had a major panic attack. They went paralized, i couldnt move my arms and my fingers went solid and clenched together this lasted for about 6 minutes untill I calmed down. Now I'm sure I have damaged my circulation because I get light waves of numbness and tingling in both my arms and hands every once an a while. It freaks me right out!

Hi danlaw80, Anxiety and panic can cause a whole variety of symptoms. I am sure that other members will be responding to your post soon. I just wanted to suggest to please be sure (if you have not already done so) to clear these symptoms with your doctor just to be on the safe side. Sometimes the left side of my body (leg and arm) will get slightly numb and I'll get a shooting pain down my arm and leg. At the same time, I'll get a shooting pain or slight twitch in my head. I'll also have slight twitching in my left leg. Is this from anxiety? I keep thinking I am having a stroke or aneyurism, it is ridiculous.

Jay, I remember for quite a while I would get numbness on the entire left side of my body. I swore I was having a stroke or something! Now I get it in my hands, arms, legs and face but usually not all at once. My doc told me this is caused by overbreathing and when I started breathing excercizes, it got much better!

Rhonie- I have the numbness in my left side including parts of my face, arm & legs. Do you experience the numbness on one side or is your's more generalized? My neurologist told me that its not too uncommon for people to experience this sort of numbness without any explaination. I am curious to learn more about what your Dr. told you. When I do have a bad panic attack, I get a lot more numbness and its in differnt areas, usually starting in the tips of my fingers and toes and working inward. What about you? Jay

Hi Jay I have numbness quite often even when I'm not having a panic attack. I've been to my doc several times and it is a symptom of anxiety. I get those sharp pains in the head too and they used to cause full blown attacks.

Dona- I am so glad you posted this information! I have had these icepick headaches for years now. I am 32 and have had the headaches longer than the panic. Some days I get dozens of icepicks and other days, maybe only a few. I usually have them everyday and even in the night. The pain can be pretty intense or pretty mild and they last maybe 3 seconds. I have been to the doctor and had MRI's of my brain and of course everything is normal. But I do think its interesting that a few of us have these headaches. Do you still get them and do you notice any pattern that brings them on? Has anyone out there had any numbness that occurs without the panic? Jay

jenron, First of all welcome to the site, You have come to the right place! Please feel free to roam the site at your own pace. If you look to the left of the screen under "TOOLS" you will find many supportive tests. These tests are not diagnostic tools and are not a replacement or substitute for a physician's advice. The purpose of these tests is to prepare you with information that you can present to your physician. When you're finished the test, you can either print your Final Report or email it directly to your doctor. We also have developed a Panic Program. This program is 12-weeks and involves the tools mentioned above. Each session is based on the previous session, so we strongly advise that you work slowly through the program and not jump ahead. You best advice is to go to a doctor to see what the pain situation entails. Your anxiety level will increase more if you wonder all day what could it be! Check with your doctor first and put your mind at ease. Hope this helps, Josie This message was edited by Josie, Support Specialist on 6/17/2004 @ 10:07:38 AM

I know this is an older topic, but I was searching google and came across this particular post as well as this site (which is great). I have similar problems with this sharp pain in the back of my head. I just want to know what it is.. .it scares me to death and sometimes the pain is so sharp that it causes me to stop what I'm doing for a second. It never lasts more than 5 seconds and sometimes it happens several times a day. Mine occurs mostly on the bone behind my ear. Is this something that someone knows about? The pain feels like a sharp stab and almost like an electrical shock. I would like to know what this is. Of course I'm scared to death to go to the doctor because I'll be afraid they'll say it's a brain tumor. (ahhh the joys of panic) Jennifer
