Sunny,
Sorry about your siblings.  This must have been devastating, since it was within the same family.

On the topic of vacuuming, have you heard of the Budhist vacuum cleaner?

It has no attachments.

Good morning everyone:  Actually my first panic attack ever was when I was vacuuming.  I remember I had been worrying about my sister's cancer and feeling helpless to do anything.  I had lost two brothers before and now was losing her.  So in a way, because vacuuming was mindless, it did allow my mind to wander to negative thoughts.  I think that's what V. means.

I find if I have to focus to the point of not being able to form negative thoughts, then any activity, menial or not, will help me.

Music does help, since I'll usually focus, but the idea is to compete with the negative thoughts.

I think the idea of "menial" is subjective, since my skill level on a lathe wouldn't be as good as Davit's skill level.

I may try to change a flat tire tomorrow, and that may be menial for some, but it will be a welcome and confidence-building task if I can find the time to do it in the morning. It's not menial for me, since I may never have done it, and I have a small time window, and a lot to do.  I like learn new things, though, and I like to set a goal and achieve it.  In this case, I'd even save some time and money, since the kit costs so little, and the process, from what I've seen on youtube, could easily be done by anyone with the kit.  The problem is that there may be a more serious problem, and risking an accident because of a blowout is not prudent, when I can have a professional do it.  Of course the professional will charge a ridiculous fee, but that's just something about living in the big city that I have to deal with.

Davit mentioned once about counting as a distraction from anxiety, and I used to do that for work, so it's understandable now how I'm taking time adjusting....like being up at this very early time in the morning.

But what about Me. I like to do menial tasks and I like to do them by myself. And I do not need a radio or music for company. I can spend hours in almost total silence weeding my garden (Bird sounds or the wind the only intrusion) with out my mind running to anxiety. I can grind and press apples for hours by myself (usually around eight hours) and think of nothing. Is it just me or is this a skill. Or an adaptation. I was a feller. Six hours a day I cut down trees by myself with no one close enough to talk to and no noise but the saw. Maybe I'm unique. When I get that edgy, itchy panicky feeling I like to work with my lathe. It is silent and about an hour is what it takes to get rid of the anxious feeling. I don't even have to build anything. Just make saw dust so to speak. Right now it is totally silent. Not even the cat snoring.
But I can also listen to music while I drive and I can work with someone and talk at the same time. We can also work in total silence too. It matters not to me.
In fact during panic attacks I preferred to be by myself or for people to at least not talk to me. Some hospitals have a silent room for people with excess anxiety. Yet I know people that need to talk or be with some one in the same situation. How about the members here, what is your preference? Am I the only one? Could it be what you grew up with? I'm from a broken family and have only one older brother who I prefer not to tell me what to do.

Hello Vincenza. It is funny, when I realized such tasks I always felt bad but I didn't understand why. I would love to hear an explanation why this happens.

Do not take on menial or routine tasks too regularly, such as vacuuming, raking or washing dishes. These tasks can make your mind wander back to your negative thoughts.  If you are doing such tasks, make sure that you have a friend to perform them with, or music to listen to so that you can keep your mind occupied and off your state.
