Negative core beliefs €“ Part III

I think I am both too. I can't define myself to one.
But good point Davit....
Hmm.. what can I do?
As a Sociotropic, I'll have to find a way to find my self worth on my own, without the influence of others... which is quite hard for me. I guess I can write in my diary all the things that are great about myself every night.
As an Autonomous, I need to tell myself that's it's ok to depend on others sometimes and that I am enough. I hope writing all my accomplishments here everyday will help me a little.

I really don't think I could type myself and put my self into any one category..
I am a bit of both..I think it is a little more complicated than this...
I would have to disagree with Becks simplistic view....

I fall on autonomous because I am very goal oriented and worried that I could fail.

Okay.... But what are you going to do about it?  Do you think you are safe from one core belief because your type is not prone to them? Because you are not prone to one type does that mean you are missing something or  can't function in that "type" surrounding? Is this a possible reason to not be able to do something or is it really just anxiety?

Food for thought.

Hi,  I think I'm the autonomous type.  I'm highly reactive to if I have a bad day at work.  My anxiety will increase and then i'm more hypervigilant to my emotions and things going wrong.  Even getting accepted to a masters program in the fall, I can't get excited about it because I keep thinking after its done I'll just have to go back to my job which I have been coping well in.  As a child and teenager, I can remember always studying ALOT and seeing every possible angle a situation could go in, to avoid failure.  It's interesting... I'm not sure where I got that belief from that I had to achieve to be happy.

I think I'm abit of the sociotropic type as well, but not as much.

Members,

In general, there are three types of negative core beliefs:

•    Negative Core Beliefs about Yourself
•    Negative Core Beliefs about the World and Others
•    Negative Core Beliefs about the Future

All negative core beliefs can cause problems. Theories also suggest that certain dispositions and certain life events will affect people differently. There are two categories:

•    Sociotropic: concerned about relationships, concerned of the possibility of disapproval, ones sense of self- worth is based on acceptance & love from others, wants to maintain close relationships & worries about being unlovable.
•    Autonomous: have a high need to be independent and reach goals outside the relationship, sense of self worth is based on productivity, achievement and control, overly concerned with the possibility of failure & worried about being incompetent or unable.

According to theories such as by Beck, the matching between dispositions and life events can make the difference between could impact the severity of impact the life event will have on the individual. ۬۬For instance, a sociotropic is more likely to be negatively affected by a break-up whereas an autonomous by being fired from his/her job.

Which category do you fall into?
