"I get sudden extra heavy urgent feelings of dread and despair." This is a normal reaction at the beginning of a quit. It's because you feel like you have lost your best friend the cigarette, but that was no friend. It was only shortening your life with every breath you inhaled from it. Like Pappy said, your mind is trying its best to make you cave in and go back to smoking. You just have to be stronger than the urge. In time, these feelings of despair will go away, but if they don't or they get too much stronger, I'd suggest you go talk to your doctor. I'm sure he/she can help you. There are a couple of sister sites to this Stop Smoking Center that may be able to help you out too. Click on the help at the top of the page, and then other sites. Depression center and panic center are the ones I'm thinking of.
