New chantix quitters

16 years ago 0 706 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi there, I also used Chantix to quit smoking. I have been quit almost 6 months now, have to say that Chantix was a HUGE help! Everyone reacts differently to medication, and with that said, everyone will act different when they come off the medication. I took the Chantix for about 6 weeks. I took it week 1 and 2 like it says to take it.. On week 3 I cut the dose in half, 1 pill in the AM, because I couldn't handle the side affects... I took it that way for another 3 weeks. When it came time to refill I decided that I would try to not take it.. seeing as it was 100.00 for a refill. I told myself that if I had ANY problems I would take it again. I had literally no problems... The first few days I may have had a few more cravings, but nothing that I couldn't handle... BUT, like I said before.. everyone is different... Also, I did speak with my doctor about it before I went for it... You can do this.. take it one day at a time, one hour at a time, one minute at a time.. heck, one second at a time if you have to. This is the best thing you could do for yourself and you will feel soooo much better really soon!!!! Take care and keep up the quit! Well, well - just so you know, by noon or so I was climbing the walls, kind of like day one all over again. Took a 1mg Chantix and it is now approaching 1:30 pm central time - the craves are easing a bit but I have learned a lesson (at least for me)- Don't go off this stuff too soon! I think it's kind of like pain medication - better to take it BEFORE the pain sets in. Good to hear from you Starfish! Glad to know your hubby is following in your footsteps. BTW, the fogginess thing does indeed go away - I'm a week "ahead" of you and Lori quitwise and I must say, I am now able to concentrate on things that need doing without incessant thoughts about you know what. Quite a relief. For a while there, I wondered if I would ever be able to pay the bills again or finish the NY Times crossword. Aloha, thanks much for bumping the Chantix thread. Sully, I appreciate hearing about your experience. Thank you! I "forgot" to take a Chantix last night and haven't yet taken one this morning. So far, I feel absolutely no different than any other morning since about a week into my quit. (The first week compares to nothing before or since, if you get my meaning). Depending on how I feel today, I may take 1/2 tablet at noon. I plan to play it by ear. Hey all Been so busy lately haven't been able to stop by and catch up. I am still making it with my quit. Hey Margo and Lori, my co-September quitters, glad to see you still around. Each day is getting easier and husband actually has made it five days which is helping me. Still taking it one day at time and finally the foggyness is fading. Have a great week. Margo I bumped up a thread about weaning off chantix. In it there are a number of different approaches. Some people went off it very early with no problems, others took it pretty much the whole 12 weeks. A number of us weaned ourselves off it gradually. Some of us experienced increased cravings immediately, but not sure if they were from no chantix or related to milestones, or a combination. Do what feels right to you, but put keeping your quit as a number one priority. Good going Sully! Hey Lori! You and Starfish are my co-September quitters. I'm glad to have some company on this journey! Have made it though the weekend ok and heading into another week. I do believe that we can really do this. Playing it by ear sounds like the way to go. I will let you know how it goes if/when I start tapering off the Chantix (God Bless the pharmaceutical industry) Margo My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/21/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 16 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 400 Amount Saved: $100.00 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 4 Mins: 48 Seconds: 15

Hi Margo - Congratulations on your 3 weeks. That is fantastic! I am sure that some of the people who have more time in will have some good advice or personal experiences to share with you. It seems from what I've read that going off Chantix early is fairly common. I know for myself, that I am going to be on this awhile. I don't know if that will be 6 months or 1 month, but I'm just playing it by ear. Even though the side-effects have been difficult, I have found it to be such a beneficial tool that I will take the benefits over the disadvantages for now. After 20+ years of smoking, I feel like I'm fighting for my life and I will use whatever tool I can to help me for as long as it takes. I hope that everyone has made it through the weekend without too much difficulty. Margo, I tried stopping Chantix 1 week ago after being on it for 1+ months and really craved badly so I went back on it 2 days ago but am only taking 1 pill in the morning and am doing much better. Lori, thanks for starting this thread. Glad to know you are succeeding with Chantix. For myself, I have tried most every other way to quit over the last 43 years. This time, I'm actually succeeding. Wonder of wonders. The Chantix sure helped me survive the build up to quitting, hell week, heck week and now I'm into the third week (does it have a name? :)) I find myself wondering if I could start to taper off the Chantix. I think I'd like to be done with it sooner rather than later. I would really like to hear from anyone who has stopped Chantix relatively early in their quit. Good decision? Bad decision? I do think I would taper off rather than stop abruptly. Just looking for some advice from those with experience. Thanks! Hi Lori, Welcome to the SSC. This is the best thing since ice cream. I am not kidding. Check out some of the threads on this sight. There is a reciept for quitting soup and a prayer line. Something to help every one who wants to quit smoking. I look forward to watching your quit.
