I can't stop gaining weight!

Jeff, the first thing DO NOT SMOKE!! I lost a quit because I could not stand the weight. Now I am starting all over. What is working for me this time I came prepared. First I started eating better and counting my calories. I still get plenty of food, but much healthier. I found out you can't quit and eat cookies and ice cream all of your waking hours :eg: At that time I was walking on my treadmill for about an hour a day, but was putting in more way calories than I was working off. I still walk 5 or 6 times a week and I joined a 30 minute work for women. So far things are good. I am smoke free and maintaining for the first time :gasp: Just hold on to your quit and work with your doctor. There a websites out there that can help. I am using on of them to track my workouts and food. Good luck. Jeff, Take the time to talk to a nutritionist, your doctor, and an exercise trainer. You may not be eating the right food or the right amount, your body may be plateauing and looking into these can make a difference. Help come up with a plan that is right for you and be assured it will come in time. 150 days is nothing to sweep under the rug, so reward yourself well :) Josie, Support Specialist

Hi Jeff, I was told by my doctor that people who quit smoking drop their metabolism by 10% or more and that is why some people experience weight gain. It is supposed to level out by 6 months to 1 year. I have gained about 10 lbs. since I quit in March. Its very frustrating as I was already 150 when I quit. I do know that some of mine was overeating and I soon stopped doing that. Now I am about to start working out with a friend of mine and hopefully I can level this out soon. All my doc could tell me was to exercise and eat healthier and then wait until I stablized. I am only at 3 months, so I quess its a waiting game from here. Sorry I could not help. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 90 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,250 Amount Saved: $450.00 Life Gained: Days: 9 Hrs: 14 Mins: 4 Seconds: 46

Nilbey, I think theres a few hundred people on this site that will disagree with you about gaining weight. Jeff, I am with you. Have gained about 15lbs and I am very much watching what I eat and I am working out and still gaining. It just seems to be that way for some, better for others. I will keep working at it. I have read that it does level off around the six month mark (180days or so) Hang in there! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 86 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,150 Amount Saved: $907.30 Life Gained: Days: 10 Hrs: 13 Mins: 19 Seconds: 0

That sounds like something you really need to work with your doctor about. Sudden weight gain like that generally is caused by overeating (which you say you're not doing) because of stress or depression, or some kind of health issue. You should speak with your doctor about your concerns and perhaps together you can work out a solution. Quitting smoking on its own does not cause you to gain weight, so it seems like there is something else at work here. It has been 4.5 months and 29 pounds. I do not know what to do. I am working out 1 hour per day and it is getting more difficult as time goes on. I was 160 and now I am 189. I am breathing heavier, not sleeping well and generally feeling pretty bad. I felt much better as a smoker but I do not want to go back. What should I do. Don't tell me to diet because I am not eating any more or less than I was eating when I was smoking. When I went for my physical last month, the doctor was happy I had quit but told me my blood pressure was way up (probably due to the sudden weight gain). Help!
