Lzee, Many people dont have a stressing factor to have cause for a panic attack, sometimes they just come out of the blue. Which is what makes our heads spin trying to comprehend What in the &*&* happened? Why? When my first attack began, I had zero marital problems, zero financial problems, good job, was on holiday break, actually was the day after Christmas, a wonderful holiday, and just sitting on the sofa when BAM! But regardless of having a stressor to trigger it or not, it does not make you CRAZY, maybe makes you feeling as if your going crazy, because being told its a panic attack, your not going to die, is just soooooooo unimaginable after what we experience when it happens. You convey very well what you are feeling, I do think instead of waiting or only thinking an ER trip is where it would lead you to only being sent home can be avoided, true I have gone to the ER, seems unless its life or death, the doctors dont put much credence to it and do send you home, but a start with your general doctor who should do blood work to rule out an overactive or underactive thyroid should be your first step. Second there are medicines, I know your cringing, and its not a mortal sin to take some until you can get them suppressed, would you forego an antibotic for strep? Its not a life sentence. Please stay with us and let us know how you are doing. Trish

All of us who experience panic in it's various forms and for various reasons, have come through some hard times. The reason I finally went to the doctor, was because I had to help two of my friends who were worse off than myself. My attention turned to them, I was able to get up the courage to ask for help myself. I lost it in the doctor's office, and cried; but you know what? Where ever I have lived, and whatever doctor I have had to talk to about my problems has never just sent me home, or told me to forget about it. If you could get someone you trust to go with you right into the office, it might help. Start with a normal family doctor. Then, after you explain your problems, they may refer you to someone else. Just explain what happened to you, and that you searched the internet for help. I often still get the feeling just before I see my doctor, that he is not going to understand me, or ignore my problem somehow, but actually that never happens. Regardless of your test results here; you may have some other kind of a problem, and you need to look after yourself. I hope you can reach out to someone you know, who will help you through this process... Please take care...

That post is a waste. I am not good at sharing feelings. What I wanted to say simply is. I have never imagined there is any thing like what I experienced last night. I want to thank you for offering help. And I want to say I admire your courage.

I do not know what to say. I feel like I need to thank you for taking the time to extend a hand to a stranger. I have never totally lost it before. I google searched in here last night because I was out of control. I could not stop the terror. I have been tense, stressed, even somewhat panicky, but closing my eyes and concentrating on breathing or going for a walk and breathing always brought me back to planet earth. Last night I barely made it back to the house. The more I tried to empty my mind, the more terror filled it. I have a friend who went to the hospital with a panick attack, they just sent him home so I didn't think that would do any good. Besides he really has problems in his life. He has a reason to lose it. What are the chances this will happen to me again? How can I stop it? I have erased this several times, but I feel I owe you an explanation and I can not stop thinking about last night. What do I do tonight? This is so rambling and disjointed and so just words but I can not seem to better. I took the test, its says I don't have a problem. That does not square with last night. I tore this website apart last night looking for answers. Last night I have never felt so alone. Your posts let me know others have been through this. I have heard it said true courage is how you respond to fear. Without fear you have bravado, fools. How do you do this? I do not want to be brave! Not like last night. More inadequate words.

Lzee, The key to managing the attacks to a more lower scale is breathing exercises while in a non panic state. If you wait till your in a panic attack, your natural instinct is to fight it, and the longer you fight the attack, the longer it last. When you do your deep breathing, are you taking the air in via mouth or nose? Thru the mouth will give you more of the hyperventilation syndrome that will domino into the rapid heartbeat, suffocation feeling, dizziness, etc. Take your breaths in thru the nostril hold for about 5 seconds and exhale thru the mouth s-l-o-w-l-y to release. Repeat. This is more of the diaphragmatic (spelling?) breathing that is correct. I have found myself literally on the floor in a fetal position, paralyzed, during panic attacks, fight every inch of the way. Can't even focus enough to talk to convey what Im feeling, just sheer panic. Benzo's do help alot in attacks, of course taken during the day to offset having horrible attacks. Keep posting we know exactly how you feel. Trish

Lzee, Have you spoken with your doctor about your anxiety attacks, if not please try our Anxiety Test. Our Anxiety Test is a free diagnostic tool. The purpose of the test is to prepare you with information that you can present to your physician. When you're finished the test, you can either print your Final Report or email it directly to your doctor. An important note to remember is that our Anxiety Test is not a replacement or substitute for a physician's advice. If you have any questions or concerns with this test, please contact our support team at support@paniccenter.net. Please continue posting with us, Josie

Lzee, I have to agree with redface, the only way I have gotten better is through a combination of medication and therapy. Some people can do it without meds, but I got so bad that all of the relaxing and breathing techniques in the world couldn't slow my mind down. Once I found the correct dosage of zoloft 100mgs for me, and I finally broke down and began to take klonopin(I really fought taking that one) did I begin to relax and I was then able to focus on what was happening to me and begin to work thru it. I no longer take klonopin and I am discussing with my doctor the possibility of lowering my dosage of zoloft. If you really want to get well and be healthy it is possible to take medication and then discontinue them once your feeling better. I say this because so many people refuse to even give meds a chance because of the fear of dependency. If you haven't seen a doctor about this I would suggest making an appointment right away. That's your first step to getting your life back.

I have often felt the same way, sometimes I wanted to just disappear into non existance...I then become very depressed and wish I just didn't exist. The main thing that has helped me so far is medcation. Once on medications I can usually handle things that I could not handle in panic situations. There are many other cognitive therapy ideas to change your thoughts, but I find that in order to really benefit from these feelings it is first important to be calm. That is where medications come in; or some kind of intense therapy which you can read about on many discussions on this site.

Is there any way to get control of an attack. I have never had one so strong. On a scale of 1 to 10 I am having a 35. Somebody stole my air. I have tried deep slow breathing, mind clearing, walking but now I am so very dizzy. Nothing is working. I want to curl up in a ball and disappear.
