Thank you every one for your ideas and encouragmement. I must admit I am getting a little nervous now which I guess is to be expected but am determined this time will be the one! I have tried so many times before and failed that I just have to suceed this time around. I think the biggest problem for me is boredom and before you say it I know cigarettes hardly relieve boredom but I have smoked for over 20 years and its just part of my day to day activity which I now have to stop. This site has been a real help already so am hoping to continue to find inspiration here. Thanks again Chops

Hi Chops, Congratulations on your decision to quit. I spent my first few days glued to this site just reading and reading. When I tried to keep myself busy it seemed to trigger more cravings because everything I did I always did with a cigarette in my hand or mouth. I also chew gum, suck on hard candies and spent lots of time taking deep breaths. It is all really a small sacrafice to stay quit :p My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/21/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 29 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 589 Amount Saved: $188.5 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 2 Mins: 23 Seconds: 8

Welcome Chops. Congratualtions on your decision to quit smoking. One thing that has helped me with the oral fixation is chewing on soda straws, as I am doing now :). It helps take the edge off. As others have noted, drink a lot water, come to this site often to read and post your experiences. You will find a lot of support here and that can be what makes the difference for you. Welcome to the SSC and congratulations on your decision to quit. Some of the things I did and learned along the way that really helped me were: Peppermints - whenever I wanted a cigarette, I would pop a peppermint in my mouth. Still carry them with me today most of the time. Drink a lot of ice water - it flushes out your system and for me it took that nasty cigarette taste out of my mouth. Deep Deep Breaths - and lots of them. Take time to find stress relief ideas (there are tons of sites for that) and use them. It really works. The most important thing is to know that with each passing moment you will be closer to never feeling the effect of withdrawal again. The freedom is sooooo worth it. You CAN do it. Hi chops, First of all, congratulations on your decision to quit! One of these days soon, you will realize its one of the smartest things you ever did. My thing has been chewing gum. It really replaces the whole oral fixation thing for me, and whenever I feel like lighting up, I pop a piece of gum in instead. The other really, really important thing I did: I parked my sorry, nicotine-addicted tush in front of the computer, came to this site and read and read and read and read. I found other people's stories inspirational, and discovered that a lot of people had gone through what I was going through right then, and as horrible as it was, they came through it and were really glad they did. If they could do it, I could. And so can you! A lot of times, by the time I finished reading, a crave (or five) had come and gone. I'm sure the others here will have a lot of good suggestions. We're all rooting for you! Hi everyone, it is my quit day tomorrow and I am just wondering if anyone has any cool ideas on how to keep busy. I am creating a list and have all the usual things like taking baths, gardening, going for a walk etc but would really appreciate any suggestions you can offer which will help keep my mind and hands busy! Many thanks Chops My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/20/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 0 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0 Amount Saved: 0 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: 0

Hi Guys, Thank you so much for your continued support it is really appreciated. How do I get onto the IM? It would be nice to bounce some thoughts around and get some one to one encouragement with you guys in the UK. I am still trying to get into the right frame of mind so am going to see how I get on and maybe have another go over the weekend. I so desperately want to do this and I know if I can get through the first day I will take inspiration from that but I just cant seem to make that first step. I'm rubbish I know but at least it is still very much in the forefront of my mind, I will do this! Chops xx
