Vikkee, let us know how your doing after you get back from your trip to Florida. I bet once you get there and start to relax and enjoy yourself you'll notice your heart isn't acting up anymore, that should reassure you that your heart is healthy. Sometimes when we are under alot of stress and even if we are taking medications , the stress will cause us to have physical symptoms. We may feel that we are fine and not under anymore stress then normal, but if you sit down and really think about it you may realize more has been going on in your life then you originally thought. I hope you have a great time in Florida say hello to Mickey for me!

I've been on the beta blocker Inderal and Xanax for over 15 years. The 2 of them together worked miracles for a long time. In the past 2-3 months I've been waking up with my heart pounding, but I didn't feel like I was having a panic attack, so I assumed it really was my heart this time, combined with the fact that I just turned the big 5-0. So in the past 3 weeks, I had the 24 hour holter, a thyroid scan, and an echocardiogram. I went for my follow up yesterday for all these tests and my cardiologist found NOTHING! I know the symptoms are there, and I'm thinking that even all the ER doctors plus my cardiologist have to be wrong. Especially since even after all the tests and reassurances, I woke up with my heart racing and pounding again just less than 3 hours ago. I don't feel panicky, I just feel my heart pounding in my chest. My pulse is 78, and my common sense tells me nothing is wrong, but dang! Anyhow, the doctor says I'm just more in tune with the changes of my heart than the average person and told me to go take a trip to Florida, which I've been putting off because of all this. Now I have no excuses. He's not changing any of my meds. Anyway, I know what you're feeling and if I had my panic attacks with it, I'd be a mess. So anyway, nothing is wrong with me. I'm telling myself that over and over, and I told myself that if these tests came back negative, I'd no longer worry about pounding racing heart. I'm finding out it's a bit more difficult to ignore than I thought. Surely they missed something, yes? When I'm dead, I can't say "I told you so". So maybe it's a conspiracy. All the doctors have gotten together and conferred, and are telling "Vikkee" she's okay so she doesn't worry. Now, I'm just being silly, aren't I? So I'm leaving for Florida in a few days, and I WILL fight these feelings. And I WILL not let this stop me from living anymore. I don't think there's much else to do but pray to get me through these times. I've got to stop living to die, but live to live another day. I think I can. I think we all can. Good luck!

Oh I take Xanax also, and it didnt interfere with the beta blocker either. Trish

My heart rate only accelerated with my attacks, otherwise it was normal, I am on 50mg Atenolol which is generic for Tenorim and cheap too. I take half in the morning and half in evenings. I guess the reason I was so nervous those first few days taking it, thought well how will it affect me when my heart rate in normal, but it didnt slow it down majorly, they also have a lower dosage available, and reason I split my one pill during the day. It helped as far as my catastrophic thinking as my heart was always a major worry that it was beating so fast, I would either have a heart attack or go into cardiac arrest when in a panic attack state, so when I first ventured out, I was bit nervous, but my heart wasnt racing, and therefore I didnt get the immediate fear of having a heart attack, my pulse was normal, normal in the sense that it was maybe 75-80 max, but without the beta blocker most definitely would have been in the 100's. outlaw, since you said your not able to take a SSRI then maybe a beta blocker is for you. I took tenormin for a while and it helped me tremendously. Beta blockers slow down the force at which your heart beats, it keeps it regulated so you can't psych yourself into making it beat faster and skip beats all of the time. Tenormin is used frequently for people who suffer from anxiety related heart irregularities.

Outlaw, I too get the rapid heartbeat with my attacks, my last visit I was semi panic attack status enough that my doctor put me on a beta blocker, it slows down the heart rate, I was a bit nervous taking it the first few days, and ventured out Saturday out of town with my husband, was tad nervous going, but no rapid heartbeat, and ended up THROUGHLY ENJOYING the day! outlaw, if you've been through all of the testing for your heart and everything came back normal, then you've got to try to relax. I know it's not easy, but the more you worry about it the more you make yourself have irregular heart rhythms, and chest pain. It is hard to believe that our minds are capable of causing us to have specific aches and pains , but it does. I know you said you were taking xanax , but are you also taking an SSRI for your anxiety? Xanax will work in the short term , but won't really help you to conquer your anxiety. If it is chemical then you need another type of medication. let me know how things go.
