The "Non-smoker" ????????

18 years ago 0 2257 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Cybrduke is right on - You smoke one cig day and you're a SMOKER. Addiction does not care if you smoke only 1 or if it's 39 a day. "Part Timers" - my mother in law is one of these -- she works all day and comes home at night after dinner and smokes about 2 cigarettes. I told her years ago that if I could go through the whole day not smoking, I would not bother lighting up only 2 a night. I would quit, it seems crazy to me, but addiction is like that. You may only smoke a little, but it still has the horrible impact on your mind health and body. There are a lot of closet smokers out there, I had times where I did not want people to know I smoked so I would "get through" the meeting, activity or whatever and go home in my garage and smoke 3 in a row to "make up" for lost time. Everyone can smell smoke on you, smokers and non-smokers. If you're lying, you're not even close to trying to quit becuase you think you don't smoke. :confuse: Now that her son and I have quit, I hope my mother in law will give up those couple of cigarettes. Dear Cyberduke What a great subject! I actually do know a few of these fakers! The one who drives me the craziest is my partner at work. When I was a smoker he used to get on me every time I went out for a smoke. I always said I hate it when my own kind gets on my case. He always said I am not your kind, I only smoke one in the morning and one at night. Now I like to get on him and say he is actually more hooked then I WAS. Cause he can't give up the 2-5 smokes a day. I have challenged him to give the 2 up and he is starting to see that he is the junkie he used to accuse me of being. If you can't quit the 2 a day ...you are hooked. Smoking 2 is the same as smoking 20. Remember the old saying.....ya can't say.....well I am just a little pregnant! Cyberduke, Your story of "one or two" reminds me of my cousin's girlfriend. They both quit together and one time at a family party, she was having a drink and smoking a cigarette. My cousin asked her about it and she said "I smoke when I drink." He said "you were smoking the other day at (so and so)'s house too!" And she said "I was drinking then too! I smoke when I drink." And my cousin said "drinking what?!?!" She was drinking lemonade... non-alcoholic lemonade! But she smoked only when she drank... in other words, anytime she had any beverage in her hand, she allowed herself to smoke too. That was her excuse. Obviously, the quit didn't last long... for either of them. :( Crave the Quit! I have. My sister quit last year about 6 weeks before I did. She lives about 4 hours from me. Last summer I went up for a visit and she was sneaking in the bathroom to smoke. What a joke, does she not realize I can smell it. I never said anything because it is her problem not mine. When I talk to her on the phone I can "hear" her lighting up. I feel so sad for her, she is only fooling herself. My meter reflects 100% smoke free time. I have made the decision that if I slip it gets reset. I sure don't want that to happen. My sister in-law came up for a visit this week with her kid. My wife and her were talking one night. My sister in-law obviously smokes, you can smell it on her. My wife brought up the topic and my sister in-law said she doesn't smoke. I jumped in. I asker her why I could smell smoke on her. That's when she said she only has one or two a day. I said that she was a smoker then. She again said she was not.... ?????????? I had to laugh. I asked her when she had her one or two a day. We started to talk about it and you know what? Her one or two a day was actually more like 15! She is so fooling herself. She has one or two in the morning before the kid gets up, has one in the car after the kid gets dropped off at day care, one or two at lunch, a couple on the way to pick up the kid, one or two after dinner, and one or two right before bed. Non-smoker? Huh? Why is there a pack of Marlboro's in your purse then? You must have just found them and were taking them to a trash can? So the truth finally came out - she's hiding it from the kid! He's going on 3 now. She wants the kid to think mom's a non-smoker and she has fallen into her own trap. She's convinced herself and calls herself a non-smoker even though she's smoking about 15 Marlboro's a day! I told her not to call herself a non-smoker around me. I told her I'm a non-smoker. I've had 0 today, not just one or two. Calling yourself a non-smoker is a joke. I also told her the kid is smarter than she thinks and her deception wont last much longer. It was amazing how much rationalization was going on in her mind. We didn't fight and it caused no problems, but it made me a bit angry to hear her call herself a non-smoker. Has anybody run into someone like this? What's the saying? Denial isn't a river in Egypt. She's fooling no one, and now that you've confronted her, she's not fooling herself anymore. Perhaps that will be the catalyst she needs to at least face the truth and be honest. Meanwhile, good for you!
