My opinion, for what it's worth, is to feel quite strong and comfortable in your quit BEFORE embarking on the diet/fitness thing. Try to avoid stuffing yourself with sweets and calorie laden food during the beginning of your quit as much as you can, but get the cigs behind you first. They'll kill you quicker than the few extra pounds.
Quitting smoking was one of the hardest things I've ever done. For the first time in my life, a diet doesn't seem half as difficult as it was before.
