Santa!

Had a GREAT day today! Had the opportunity to be Santa Claus at the christmas program at our church. Got to sit and listen to the kids christmas wishes and be part of their Christmas as their parents took pictures.   I can't think of anything that could make you feel better than that. To see those kids, with such excitement in their eyes. To see the love of them by their parents, grandparents, friends and family. What more could you ask for. Moments like that are really what you live for!

Myth or Fact?

I believe that it is true, especially after doing some reading about brain chemistry, but accepting it goes against everything we were brought up to believe. we are brought up to believe that this is the land of opportunity and we can accomplish anything if we work hard enough at it, either by will or by prayer. Examples are held up of people who don't succeed and we are shown that it is a failure in them for not trying hard enough or not having enough faith and not in the system or God for their failure. So we fight silently against this illness, hoping and praying to overcome it, but the harder we try, the more frustrated we become, the more we feel like it is our own fault and the more we spiral downward into it. And people who have never been touched by it, think we should just be able to "tough it out". It makes me very angry at times.

Myth or Fact?

I agree with you fully,Goofy. I do believe we have a responsibility to accept our situation and do everything we are capable to help ourselves recover. I just think that an important part of that is medication to try to balance the chemical imbalances we have. I just think it is very difficult to expect to recover with out medication, all 3 episodes I have gone thru one common denomintor is that I was not on any medication. Granted I did not have a support group like I have found here, but that is something that you don't find very often in the so called real world. It is survival of the fittest out there! And in dealing with friends and family, I find alot of sympathy, but not much empathy. You have to find others who have been thru it to get that and I think that makes a big difference in recovery.

Planning for the Return of Depression I

Well this is encouraging news! I have been having a hard time getting started this time. After having 2 relapses, motivation to work hard at it, just wasn't there. hopefully this will get me moving. Last thing I want is to go thru it again.

Starting over again

Going to my first actual face to face peer support program tonight. Have to admit I am a little nervous. Told my wife not to let me duck out of it, like I did last time. When i was in the hospital I found these to be one of the most helpful things, but when I got out, I just couldn't seem to get myself to go. Not sure why? Hopefully this is a step forward and will get me working on the program too. Just seeming to have a tough time getting started this time.

Starting over again

The meeting with the peer support group went very well. It is surprising, but because we are all going thru similar circumstances, there is an instant connection. Very comfortable and a good source of information. Wish I would have done this last time after I got out of the hospital. Might have been able to avoid this last time. will definitely be going back.

going round in circles

Rosie, do you have access to any peer support groups in your area?  I know starting to do that was a powerful release for me. It was a big step to go to the first one, but there was such a connection because we had all been or were going thru very similar thngs.  it just made me feel safe, not so isolated. they were all so caring, so gentle in their responses. Made me feel like I have other footsteps to follow and ones that I can trust because I know where they came from and can see where they are going. You should be able to use the internet to find them. try the mental health organizations in your state. I know as soon as I started looking I felt better because I felt like I was doing something to help my self. Take Care! You are in my prayers and we are here to help you any way we can!

Planning for the Return of Depression II

I just wish someone would have told me about this when it first happened to me. I thought the idea was to get off the meds and be "cured". Then a year later when my Mom passed and I hit some other stressfull life events, I fell much harder and much farther than before.
