Myth or Fact

Well during a panic attack it becomes very hard to move or think or breath. And it's very scary. But they all can be done, It just takes more effort. That's why I say if you have one while driving either park or get onto a side street till it passes. From personal experience I would have to say, no you won't pass out or fall down and you won't become paralysed, except with fear and thats another thing. In fact the opposite seems to happen a person tries to run but doesn't know where to run to. There isn't any thing Physically wrong with the body, the signals that tell it what to do seem to get crossed. Like being falling down tired or drunk. Adrenalin seems to be the problem. But how to stop the adrenalin rush. Well the only way to do that is stop the panic. So here we are again at square one. The concequences of panic may be chemical leading to physical but the reasons for it are all mental and this can be dealt with. Find the reason for the panic. Look it in the face and tell it to go away. Think possitive and soon you will be able to say "oh h--l I'm having another panic attack, big deal." It's becomes like gas, A nuisence in the wrong place but it can't hurt you unless you fight it. And even then not much.

does anyone else feel this FOGGY wiped out feeling?

Colleen

It could be the Celexa, It takes a week to two weeks to start to work and in the mean time it can make you feel worse. Please don't stop it, It should work and it will probably be hardly noticable when it does. It is one of the better, safer SSRIs but unfortunately because it is so slow to start people think it doesn't work The other thing I want to mention is called association. I had a friend who was a nurse and lived across from the Hospital. She started to associate going to work with some traumatic experience. Soon she couldn't walk across the parking lot, she had to drive. Could you be associating being alone with some thing bad so that every time your alone you get anxious. If you can find what it is you can look at it and say "this isn't realistic" I would guess that one day you had to get up and do something unpleasant and now subconciously you associate getting up with that even though it's not realistic. In my case it's claustraphobia I have to deal with. And no I haven't been able to totally get rid of the thoughts, but like the saying goes "better the devil you know than the one you don't". Don't let yourself feel bad because you have to take the pill, that will only make it worse. Writing down over and over what you think is the trigger will make it go away, much like closure. Now I could be totally out to lunch here, so this is just a suggestion, maybe some one has a better suggestion.

Exposure question

Colleen

In your case exposure is not going places, it's staying home. Here lies the problem. To do exposure you have to know what is causing the problem. In your case I'm going to guess that you don't like it when your Hubby goes to work and leaves you at home. So exposure would be facing this fact. One way to do it is write down why this bothers you. And then question why this bothers you. Now of course if there is some other reason why you don't want to be alone then you have to find out what it is so you can expose yourself to it. It's all about facing it and realizing there is no reason for it. The more you can do this the easier it gets. Your going to have to fight it cause your mind is going to try to keep you from facing it. Alot of people don't like deing alone so they play music all day. (me) or they have pets that need care (me) or T.V. (not me, I don't like the comercials) You are tiring yourself out triing to not face the problem. Write down how you feel all day so you can find why you don't like to be alone. If I'm out to lunch on this then ignore this post.      Again exposure is facing the problem a little at a time till you can face it full on. Eq. Being alone a little more each day.  I hope this helps, if not keep questioning. Maybe I got it wrong.

Question

Yes. I used to keep the bathroom hot because the other thing that happens is the need to use the toilet. So I'd be sitting there with a blanket over me shivering. It went when the panic went.

Panic Disorders and fear of dying

All I did is rub A535 into my chest to relax the muscles that have tightened up because I forgot to breath. My pulse and B.P. used to go up into the scary range. I mean way up. I have a monitor because I have mild Hypertention. My doctor wasn't concerned, but it still scared me.

Question

Hey Texan.

I bought the book (Anxiety and phobia workbook) Good book I highly recomend it. People if you don't want to buy it maybe your library has it. A very good companion for the program. A bit limited on herbals but that is minor. Good artical on SAD. I bought a light a while back. Any one who is interested, it works. I sleep better and have way more energy.

Setbacks with chronic headaches

If all your tests are Ok then you may be just Calcium deficient. You may be even if tests say your not. You have the symptoms. Simple test. 1 gram calcium 3 times a day on an empty stomach on your worst day. Panic should be reduced within the fist half hour and gone by the last dose. It's worth ruling out.  If Texan Femme is reading this, Page 320 of the anxiety and phobia book.

Question

Hello every body.

First. Lisamarie, I mentioned Buspar on a previous post.  It does the same thing as Xanax but in a different way. It is not related so you can take them together if you have to. It is not addictive. But you have to take it regularly. I had no trouble with it. It didn't make me sleepy. Xanax and all the Benzo's can be a big problem over time. The problem can be reversed but it takes a long time. Buspar will take a while to start working and if it works for you I am sure you will be happier on it. Benzo's (xanax) have too many ups and downs. You won't get quick relief with Buspar, just one day you will notice a reduction in the anxiety and in a short while later you will start to feel normal. So much different than the Xanax. This is presuming that it works for you. There was no rebound when I quit taking it. I am so close to being the way that I was that it sometimes scares me. I also am off all medication. You can do it and so can your friend.

About the light. What it is is a box with three full spectrom flourescent lights in it. It replaces the day light that is missing in the winter. SAD is a dissorder where your seratonin and melatonin levels get all mixed up and can be a major cause of panic during that period fall to spring. Or if you work indoors a lot. You have to sit in front of the light for around a half hour a day, usually at breakfast. Mine is on a stand so you can use the area below it. The UV is filtered out so you won't get a tan or burn from it. If you have SAD it will work right away. You will have more energy, be calmer and sleep way better. If it does nothing for you (Not SAD) it makes one super reading light. There is some information on the Net under SAD ( Seasonal adjusted disorder). Other people using it or have access to one say they feel good right away. I bought mine from Sears. There may be better models but I like this one. It has two stands and can also be wall mounted. What ever you buy make sure it has more than one setting. Up here in Canada you can try one at the Hospital for free.  Every little thing you can do to reduce the anxiety helps. I find myself now saying " who is this Guy", I haven't felt this normal in a lot of years. If you have to stay on the Xanax, have a therapist explain how it works chemically, not mentally, it will make a big difference in how you use it.  Oh and the chills. I used an electric heater in the bathroom and closed the door so it was the only hot room.
And above all remember that if some one as messed up as I was can get better then so can anyone.

Panic in crowds

princesspat.

Yes! A lot of people in fact more than you would imagine. It's called Agoraphobia which technically is the fear of being in a situation you have no control over. So that being said. Two things. Read the forums under Agoraphobia and you will see your not alone. And secondly, no two ways about it the program will help, but it is like being in school, you only get out what you put in. And in this case you need an "A" to function. We can help with any questions you have but you have to do the work. I went all through school with it and it was no fun especially knowing I didn't have to. There is medication that will help but your work will suffer. If this is just now starting I would think you can get by with just the program. No one here that I know of is a doctor so any thing said here is just a suggestion but since it works for some of us and it appears that there will be more coming along as people finish the program I have to say it's worth the effort.
