Hell week is now officially over for me!

Well as of , 12:30 PM Pacific time August 27, 2008 was the end of my first full week of not smoking.

Thank you all for your support - this has been the first forum I have EVER been an active member of and I have been on the internet since 1995.  I would occasionally view/visit/post in technical forums for computer/repair tech issues as I am a computer geek per say, but other then that nope no chat rooms no forums, no blogs etc.  But I realized that kicking this addiction might be much easier talking with ones that have and are going through the same thing.  AND I WAS RIGHT -
So thank you all, I do appreciate all the quick and friendly responses that you all have to offer and share.

Week one is under the belt and now on to my next goal (week 2).

Laurie AKA Freespirit.

P.S. If anyone has any computer problems I would be happy to help you if I could!

Quit date 9/19/08

Welcome DEB!

Your on your way to a successful quit - many of us it takes multiple times of trying to quit before we actually succeed.  I for one have tried multiple times before and always ended up smoking.   This time though I really think this is it - this quit feels so much different then the other times.  I believe I actually want to quit smoking more then I want to smoke.  I realize where my downfall was before when I tried to quit - it was the ole "just one puff" thought - well I know now I cannot let myself have just that "one puff" it doesn't work that way.   And I can fight the "one puff" thought as it goes away after a few minutes.

So rest assured if your desire to quit smoking is greater the your desire to smoke you WILL succeed - just don't give into the "one puff" and you will be fine.  Hopefully your husband will continue his quit also, but if he does not remember this quit is your quit and yours alone.  It may be ahrder to quit with a smoker close by - but it can be done just don't give into the "one puff" - each day will get easier and easier.

Hi there PM - I would be more then happy to be your quit buddy!  We are the same age so maybe this could help as we grew up in the same era and maybe have HAD some of the same smoking habits.  I could use a buddy also!

Forever is Difficult to Fathom

"Henny Penny"  So VERY well said - "price to pay for having ever picked one up in the first place"  I realize that years down the road I will have cravings, I hear this from past smokers and even myself who quite for 5 years one time and started up again (gave into the one puff).

Having a craving or two for a few minutes down the road every now and then is better then being a smoker and it may be a craving I get for the rest of my life I just know I cannot give into the "one puff".  I am willing to deal with that as it is so much better being a non smoker then a smoker.

HI its PM and I am looking for a quit buddy

Wasn't sure what the add to buddy list option was or is.  I think that is only for if you are using the Instant messenger option to talk direct like live messenger - but that option will only work if both parties are logged into Instant messenger.
Otherwise yes we all our quit buddies and when you need help you just post as there is always readily someone on this board to help you out at any given time.

PM is coughing part

Hi PM!

Hey Bud!  I'm still here - was gone on vacation all last week!  Yea coughing is totally normal - you gotta get out all that tar and stuff out of your body somehow!  This is the normal process the body is using to heal itself.   The coughing does get better over time!  I'm on day 49 and while I still have cravings at times it has gotten so much easier!  This last vacation one of my sisters were smoking out by the outside deck table where we were sitting - I felt the urge to have a drag and so I thought I would go inside and get a peice of Nico gum out of my purse.  By the time I walked inside the house I forgot what I even came in there for as the craving was already gone that quick.   But it could be from old age setting in why I forgot   - either OR bottom line I didn't smoke and the urge hardly lasted anytime at all.

My coughing is almost non exhistant (well not like it was that gross sounding smokers cough) at least now when I cough I sound like the average person and not like I am coughing up a lung or something.

Hang in there it gets better and better as time goes on!  I refuse to let cigarettes/nicotine have control over my life anymore.  I did for 30 some years thats long enough!  No MORE!

Yep - enough weight gained - now its time!

K 49 days no smoke - 8 pounds gained.   Got a handle on the quit - now its time to get off these pounds before they start taking over.   BUT oh boy did food ever taste so good (since I quit smoking) but enough is enough!

I'm on day two of the 6 week body makeover:

I did this eating healthy routine about 1 yr. ago and lost quite a bit so I know it works.  I just get tired of eating the same ole foods over and over again.

I have a goal to loose at least 10-15 pounds by March for our Hawaii vacation - so healthy bland foods here I come for round two!  So if I stick to it I should be able to loose that much in the a lotted time frame.

Any suggestions on what others are doing they may work?

Thanks,
freespirit

new phase-- uncomfortable

Yea, I can't seem to get the search working either.

I'm right behind ya Deb 49 days for me.  I have had these thoughts also "Is this it? Now what?"  but when I think of it - yes this is it!  I am now a non smoker - millions of people get through each day of their lives not smoking and they seem to survive just fine.  I just put those thoughts down as the Nico demon trying to find a small area to squeeze in and try to make me smoke again.  He's loosing the battle and making me feel like I am missing him, that I need him, that my life will be boring without him....

I think NOT!

Rome was not built on a day and I have been smoking for over 30 years I cannot expect it to just stop after that many years.  It will be a challange but never the less a challange that I do plan on overcomming!   You will to - over 50 days just think of it - thats almost 2 months - 1/6 of a year already! Before you know it the Winter will have passed and Spirng will have come then Summer etc.  life goes on and so will you and you will be doing it without the need of a cigarette!

This is what smoking can do to you

Pat:

I have heard of someone that was cured from cancer with Naturopathy (Natural herbs etc) I did not know this person personally but one of my sisters did.   She told me about it just this last week and said the doctors gave him less then 4 months to live - he refused chemo etc and went natural (something about carrots and something in carrots certain fruits - strict diet of certain blends of foods if I remember correctly) but any rate I am sure there are many different things one may try.   I guess after 2 years he is now cancer free and the doctors have not been able to find any trace of cancer in his system.

My sister told me she tried to get my other sister to try Natural cures for her stage 4 breast cancer (rest her sole) which my sister who passed away did not wish to try a natural cure and went with the Chemo route.   She did last 3 years longer although I am not sure if she had what would be considered "quality" life for the most of the 3 years.

Miracles happen every day - and natural may be the way for him.

Please don't smoke Pat (you know as well as everyone else her does that smoking will not help you) its a temp psychological fix and will really not help or solve anything.  And you would feel just absolutely terrible - thus making things even feel worse!

Hugs for you and your family through this time,

Laurie
