Quitting cold turkey for the 3rd time

6 years ago 0 11215 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Welcome!

Congrats on getting started. It sounds like you have lots of support which is great. The fact that you have had successful quits before is a very good sign. What did you learn from those experiences?

It sounds like when you drink and have a lot of confidence in your quit you may be more at risk for slipping. It is important to remember this. You will get tempted again but this time do not allow yourself one. Be very cautious when you drink also. Take a look at the Emergency Coping Plan and use it when needed. You might even want to print it out and keep it with you, especially if you plan to go out for drinks. You may want to avoid drinking until you are more confident in your quit.

If has been a few days since you posted last. How are you doing today?

Thanks Tim, you cannot be more right. Smoking is a massive trigger for me + my IQ drops massively when I drink
I also noticed when I quit smoking I over do it if I go out drinking .. smoking usually keeps me busy so I don't drink as much ..
Day 4 just started, I feel stronger than yesterday so hopefully I worst have passed already

Hi Xsmokerwannabe,
Been there done that so you know what to expect. Sounds alcohol is one of your major triggers. Too bad you can't quit drinking too, then your smoking problem would be solved!
I wish you the best on your journey to be smoke free this year and FOREVER.
Stay strong.

Over xmas;  me, my wife and 4 other friends agreed to quit smoking on Jan first. Today is day 3, and of the original 6 people who started  4 are still sticking to the agreement. We even started a WhatsApp group which is helping a lot
This is my third try quitting. I am 45, and I started smoking when I was 16. My first attempt to stop smoking was when I was 34, I did it cold turkey and I stopped for 4 years,  then I thought I was tough so I started smoking the odd cigarette whenever I go out for drinks .. a few months later I was back buying my own !!!!
My second attempt was 2 years ago (I was 43) and it lasted for one year .. and same scenario .. a few drinks, why not enjoy a smoke!?! and before I know it I am back to smoking
I am really hoping this time I will never ever be tempted to have another puff !  Smoking makes you so dependent on nicotine that you wont realize it until you try quitting .. its basically a legalized drug
It is my 3rd day, and I am suffering but I know I will get through today. Cannot wait to get better in the coming days / weeks
