State of Mind

elderone Thanks for that info..I hadn't looked at it that way...oxygen feeding the good cells too. I know it is faulty logic, just based on individual cases, but truthfully, it has always scared me. I also know rationally that the years of smoking caused the cancer, it's just that it showed up after they quit, hence the fear. And, again, I know it is a smart move to quit, no matter how long one has smoked. Lady, That sounds like some mean behavior from your parents. I'm glad you didn't give in. Oh boy Lady. You wrote about some of the very reasons why I chose not to quit. You see my older sister died from lung cancer and she had quit for 13 years. So why quit the cancer got her. Another sister died from lung cancer and smoked till the day they told she had cancer. My brother had heart problems, but died of cancer which was related to smoking. I have been at that crossroad for many years. Why quit you going to die of lung cancer anyway. Look at sister #1 she quit and it got her, sister #2 it got her and brother it got him so why bother. But sister #1 told me that maybe she lived a little longer because she had quit. Sister #2 begged me to quit and brother smoked until the day he died. I have struggled with this for years and for years I have tried to quit. Last year I found this site and had many attempts quitting. Everytime I came back you people were here for me. You did not judge me, you encouraged me. Along the way I have made some really good friends. I am quit now and plan on staying that way. Thanks to the honesty of people here and the wonderful support I get here. Thanks Lady, awesome post. Got this one to thinking. Ironically, We had this conversation the day after my one year quit anniversary, at a Waffle House in Tennessee and they both sat there smoking during the entire conversation. They were also eager to hand me lit cigarettes which I refused over and over again. For some reason, during this conversation, I wasn't even tempted to smoke. I guess because I was looking at the truth of the addiction face to face and all I felt was sadness. I couldn't get my point across and wound up dropping the subject. What bothers me is the fact that I can now SEE what smoking is doing to my loved ones. I am the only smoke free person in my immediate family. My mother, father, two sisters, brother, and even my daughter are all smokers now. Am I proud to be quit - you bet I am! Do I wish they would? Yep. Addiction is a sad thing when you are on the outside looking in. Lady, this is one of the few times i have been rendered speechless! I have to agree with elder one that the damage was already done, whn they quit, and that you can only look forward to a healthier happier smoke free life. Great kudos to you for getting through all that lynnexx My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/24/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 308 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,620 Amount Saved: 1,232.00 Life Gained: Days: 35 Hrs: 0 Mins: 42 Seconds: 37

Lady, the damage was already done when they quit. Quitting didn't kill them, smoking killed them. They just didn't quit in time. That's all. But you know this already. Whether your mom actually believes that quitting killed them or it is just her junkie's excuse to keep smoking is debatable. I doubt even she knows the truth. Such is the nature of addiction. Alohakeia, the oxygen feeding cancer cells is not true. Don't worry about that. Oxygen feeds all the cells in your body, both normal and abnormal. Now that you're quit, you're getting more oxygen to everywhere, including the cells that fight the abnormal ones. Overall, quitting smoking was a good move. Thats nico-logic. Lady seems your parents had it in spades, so more great the fact you managed to quit. Sometimes experiences cloud views, it doesn't mean it will always be the case. Lady That was my secret little logic I used too. Had friends who got cancer and died after they quit smoking, so I had convinced myself that the cancer wouldn't get me until I stopped smoking and let the oxygen feed the cancer cells lurking there. Still don't know for sure if that is true or not, but I am sure that quitting is a good move. We'll see how it plays out. AND, just to make it perfectly clear, I think that you, and everyone else who decides to quit, deserves support during this incredibly challenging challenge. Sorry you didn't get it from your family, but you have it from all of us. -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 159 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,360 Amount Saved: $1,081.20 Life Gained: Days: 22 Hrs: 4 Mins: 10 Seconds: 3

freakin heck lady, talk about nicotine addiction. Thats the problem with cigarettes, smoking is like a silent killer you don't see the results from years of tobacco abuse until it's too late, like they saying goes... smoking knocks 10 years off your life & the younger you are the least likely you are to be worried about this. I always joked about it saying that the last 10 years of life are crap anyway but not as crap as having half a lung chopped out & the odd heart attack !
