Great post Bob....and yes knowing you were at Esalen explains alot of your wonderful insights. Reminds me of the years when I was steeped in psychology major and therapy workshops and encounter groups and and and. Now I am steeped in gardening and chickens - less esoteric stuff. Thanks to all my understanding friends. As an elderly statesman, a title that I very much respect and enjoy, sharing life experiences some times applies here. Life itself is an addiction and there are many sub-divisions. Smoking is just one of many. Learn how to deal with one and you will find it easier to deal with them all. I don't expect everyone or for that matter, anyone to agree with the things that I post. I will continue to post things as I run across them until such time as I may be asked to not do so. Good god, this goes back to 1965-66 when I was stumbling around the grounds of the Esalen Institute in Monterey, California trying to figure is all out after having attended one of Fritz Perls �Gestalt" seminars. I was very much into humanistic psychology at the time and any one of you familiar with Gestalt Therapy knows that is deals in the �here and now� as opposed to why your mother wouldn�t let you suckle.(being polite as I didn't want't to get into penis envy at this point) The big thing then was making everything �contractual� including relationships. Egalitarianism at it's finest, most of it was crap in its purest form but there were a few things that made sense and one of them I am going to run by you at this time. Our decisions in life, what we change about ourselves and how we choose to react, are no one's responsibility but our own. But because the mind often rebels against what we know in our souls to be positive changes, putting a plan of improvement or action can be difficult. One very useful tool to help bring about change is to make a contract with you. A self contract, like any contract, is a formal written commitment and can be drafted for an infinite number of reasons. It is a contract between you and yourself that can act as a guide, a motivator, a means to enact self-improvement, or a way of making peace with yourself. You choose an aspect of your life you would like to focus on and then lay out in clear language what you want to do, how you will do it, and if you wish, a timetable. Be honest and make sure your contract reflects attainable goals. A contract that you cannot bring yourself to follow isn't going to be very helpful. In writing your contract, specify why you have created the contract, your responsibilities and the results you expect, what reward you will give yourself (if appropriate), and the individual steps you will take. Date and sign it, alone or in the presence of a witness. If it helps, you can make a ceremony out of signing your contract. Some situations in which you might want to enter into a contract with yourself may include changing a behavior or working through a personal issue. Reading the contract daily can help you remain committed to the guidelines you have laid out for yourself. Abiding by the con

Bob, The first time I heard an opinion similar to �our decisions in life, what we change about ourselves and how we choose to react, are no one's responsibility but our own�, I was too young to really understand it. My second cousin was explaining some things to us younglings. He later won the Nobel Prize in economics for a paper on discrete choice. You might enjoy his ideas. I�ll send you his site. He would have been a great philosopher. FYI: Started working on my contract today.
