How to avoid Holiday Stress Part 5

12 years ago 0 1665 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi:  yes, I have often felt that missing something fear.  I don't anymore, but for me I think it was part of my perfectionism where I wanted to be sure that I hadn't missed a single thing for the holiday.  I put that particular kind of stress on myself.

You make an interesting point about the nuclear family.  And I wonder if it affected me somehow.  At one time my parents were working in Cuba, my brother in France, my sister in Germany and the other sister in Australia.  I was the only one left in Canada.

Now that I have grandchildren the focus is more on them, how they will enjoy it and how I can see their joy and delight at Christmas.  I feel much happier seeing this.

Vincenza,
This is great advice.  I try to mediate in the morning, and in the evening, I do relaxation exercises.  I really miss the relaxation exercises if I'm too tired to do them.

I'm not certain if its unique to this time of the year, but there is this fear of missing something.  Maybe it's a reconstruction of the past with the hope that it will be better, without, for most people, the same nuclear family which has been separated for various reasons?

Make alone time. Take time out for yourself, even if it’s just 15 minutes. Spending alone time, without interference will keep you refreshed and in good spirits. Spend a morning alone reading, taking a warm bubble bath, participating in a yoga class or going for a relaxing walk.  These stress reducing activities will clear your mind and give you energy throughout the day.

Set realistic resolutions. Resolutions can set you up for failure if they're unrealistic. Set realistic, attainable goals. Don’t expect to change a life time of bad habits in a few months. Start by getting back with track with a healthy routine and don’t forget that nothing worth having come easy!
