caffeine and panic

21 years ago 0 25 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Nurseboy28, I`m not as much of a coffee fan, but I have to watch it with tea in my case, too. I`m finding that if I treat caffeine like alcohol in some ways, it helps. Trying to sip whatever has caffeine in it slowly, or drink a "chaser" of water or something without caffeine soon after, something like that. Maybe doing that follow-through helps me calm down, for that matter. Another major thing with caffeine and anxiety disorder, though, is it`s effect on my bladder!! :quest: I admire you for hanging in there with your job and your health at the same time!

REDFACE - why do you think i have bipolar? i have panic and ocd and i like coffee! coffee is a neuro-stimulant, and so i shouldn't have it. no one with panic should drink it. but, i work 12 hour shifts in a pediatric trauma hospital...i need to function *0)! is your friend bipolar?

Nurseboy, I can't hold myself back from saying this; are you bi-polar? Or do you think your hyperness could be caused by your medications? You just sound so familiar to an old friend of mine. Coffee hyper eh? Well, whatever you say. For me, when I am on medications I sometimes need coffee more to stay awake; because the antianxiety medications make me a bit sleepy, but without heavy doses I am still having panic attacks. This week was good, but like you, I am like adam and eve, and also can't seem to resist the apple, I mean the coffee. (Actually we don't know if it was an apple, but it was some kind of a fruit which represented self-determination without answering to God.) Well, I want to know as much as I can as fast as I can learn it. I just hope I am not opening up Pandora's box. But racing thoughts can be fun too. As long as they are not destructive. Well, I did quit drinking coffee for two years once, along with a really restrictive diet; but after one holiday I started breaking my diet on the plane, and couldn't go back to it even though I tried. I just can't go cold turkey anymore. Maybe that is also a symptom of Obsessive thoughts....So here I am, improving, but not perfect in every way yet!!!!I'm just glad it's not booze at the moment. Before I started getting treatment I was self medicating to go to sleep at night with four travel sickness pills and a bottle of beer. That's when I realized it was time to see the doctor, along with helping two of my friends who also needed to see the doctor for similar problems...Keep up the good work!

when the panic attacks start for me caffeine is the first thing that i cut out. i figure that if i get to the panic attacks my body defiantely doesnt need any other outside stimuli what so ever so i cut it out and it helps a little bit. i have been caffeine free for about a month or so now and your body adjusts, but i dont have any withdrawal from caffeine so its easy for me to start and stop.

I have to watch the caffeine consumption as well. I know I can safely have one and just get a light buzz going on but two in a row, and I am asking for trouble. And...the problem with going overboard on the caffeine is that it just doesn't peak like a normal panic attack, it doesn't come down for a long period of time and the racing thoughts are much more difficult to control. Even though I KNOW this happens to me, I still occassionally am stupid enough to test it from time to time. Guess I need an occassional reminder - HARD HEADED! DAnielle

i drink one cup of coffee in the am and 2 more throughout the day. it gets my body moving but also makes my thoughts race. it isn't panic...just thoughts racing. if i have 2 cups in the morning however, i'm a nervous wreck and feel like i can jump off buildings and fly...super hyper!
