Not doing anything

Thanks Davit and Sunny... I knew I was missing something so had to ask.  I love the new softer images of wind that you both shared.  I look forward to changing my fear into appreciation.  Next time it blows (probably this afternoon) I'll go outside and feel some in my hand

Hi:  You can feel wind.  You can feel it against your body, your face, your hair and your hand, as Davit said.

Love it. I live very close to nature, and I used to cut down huge trees so I am aware of wind.

Did you ever consider that the wind might have been caused by the earthquake. And since there is no quake the wind is no concern.

Not to be nit picking but you can hold the wind in your hand if you only turn it sideways a little, in fact it feels alive and interesting. You can see it in the movement of the grass or leaves. I love the wind, it tells me a different storey every time. You know wind is caused by heat rising and cold moving in to replace it. I live between two mountain ranges one facing south one north so on sunny days we can get wind. Animals move ahead of the wind, (they have reason to fear it, predators use it to sneak up on them. Deer always bed down so scent will come on the wind and so they have an open area in front down wind they can see across. Wind can be a friend. Wind makes interesting patterns in the snow. And the day after wind there are lots of new tracks from the animals that moved ahead of it. Some times in the fall I just like to watch the tops of the trees whip around and the leaves fall and blow around.

But real high winds, I like to avoid. Then I like to stay in by the heat. Wind and rain on the window, Ah nature at its best and worst at the same time.

Old native saying, "No one knows the ways of the wind and the caribou."

Maybe you can find a way to make the wind less scary, or at least more tolerable. Just think if it is blowing, some where the sun is shining.

I agree that there IS a reason for every reaction... we just don't always know what it is.  Love the bear example.  Perfect.  Story of my life   Since doing this program I have learned to be more aware of my thoughts and feelings.   Little tiny steps brought me to a huge realization about panic attacks caused by wind... which I would berate myself over... until the tiny steps led to connecting tiny dots that led to me remembering the intense winds that were blowing the night of a devastating earthquake that destroyed the city I was living in at the time.  Suddenly this stupid, absolutely no reason for it, panic about high winds....well, it made sense. Now, when the winds are raging (like yesterday... 65 mph sustained wind) I can tell myself there is (metaphorically) no bear outside (or destroyed city) and know it is true and calm myself.  I'm not perfect at it yet, but it is so much better.

Speaking of wind, Davit.... not to be nitpicky, but since I'm writing about it... I wonder ... doesn't wind defy this definition?
Also if you can't see it or hold it in your hand it is not there, you just think it is.

Davit as usual, you have an excellent way of putting things and creating an image (the bear outside) to explain how anxiety feels.

Diane, I don't know you at all so I am just blindly throwing this out there. Is it possible something triggered the anxious feeling that you are just not aware of yet? The reason I suggest this is that I spent years feeling anxious and not knowing why but once I started to analyze things in more and more depth and peel the layers of my mind, I now know that there are things that trigger my anxiety and I didn't realize that was what was happening.

It is a process of getting to know ourselves. We don't always know what or why our body / mind behaves the way it does. You may find the thought that triggered that anxiety or you may not, it can be tricky to bring stuff from the self conscious to the conscious level of awareness. The good news is that CBT can work with the conscious level of awareness to make a lot of healing possible even if we are unable to glean what is going on in the sub conscious.

Hi Diane

It is a good question for the Dr. My Therapist says with generalized anxiety there is no reason. It is one of the few things we disagree on. I figure there is always a reason. I would like the Dr.'s answer.

See this is my take. It is like this. Say you get up in the morning feeling good, all is well and when you open your door to go outside there is a bear going through your yard. You close the door and all is well. You open the door again but there is no bear. But since you did not see him go you just don't know do you. So now every time you open the door you look for the bear. You even open the door to look for him even though you are not going anywhere. It helps if you hear a bear was caught and transported but in worst cases you wonder if he will come back.

Same with anxious situations, once you have had one you always wonder if it will come back.
Difference here is that you have control over your thoughts, you have no control over the bear.

This is just my take on it. It is all wrapped up with core beliefs and what ifs.
The program will help, especially the relaxation section. Also if you can't see it or hold it in your hand it is not there, you just think it is.

Here for you,
Davit

Hi DianeS,

This is a a great question to ask Dr. Farvolden in the Ask the Expert section.

During these times what helps you move past these feelings?  Be sure to check out the Relaxation auxillary session, this session will help you.

Members, please share your thoughts.

Why at times when I feel that I am relaxed & doing something I enjoy, I get an anxious feeling.  Then I start to concentrate on that anxiousness.  I don't recall even thinking about anything that made me feel depressed or anxious.
