Medications that can worsen anxiety symptoms

My room mate went home, and the sun came out. An interesting statistic is that 25% 0f people that get septic staph infection have it go Chronic. The same percentage of people that get septic Staph from Prosthetics. Interesting. It is hard to get an antibiotic into an artificial knee because there is no blood flow to it because there is no cartilage. But there is fluid and that is all the bacteria needs. Now there is some information that it is PH dependent. It seems it may have to have a specific environment to function well. I need more information.

At my stage in this game I have discovered that attitude goes a long way. But I have discovered something neat. Second hand positivity! By me being positive when the situation calls for positive increases the possibility of the person I am reacting with being positive, which comes back around to me making me feel better.
An example. A friend has just been diagnosed with Bipolar. This is an aggressive manic person. This person has decided that if I can live under the conditions I do and smile that this person can take the medication and listen when I say, "you are not functioning correctly, what have you changed" We are in Email contact. There is mutual respect here and it may work. We also talk by phone. Do you have any idea how much good it does me to be there for some one. Immeasurable amount of positivity. The same as I get from everyone's support. I don't know if this is making sense but believe me It works.

Red can you believe this, there is no dragon. There sure was one last time, A big fire breathing one with spikes and red eyes. Like Juanita, I have turned into a new person.

Ashley, knowing all of you are there for me is very important, we are a group after all.

My turn:-)

Davit,

I am sorry to hear you are not feeling well this morning.  Is it very understandable to feel anxiety and irritable under the circumstances. I don't think I could bite my tongue and smile in your situation. It really has to be hard being in the hospital with no where to retreat to.  You said you would be home in a couple of days where you can get some peace and quiet.  I know you can hang on for a couple more days.  You can beat this.  I know you can. You've beaten the dragons many times before and you can do it again.

Hello every one.

Today is a lousy day. I am going to have a hard time making a good day out of it. In the next six weeks you may find a difference in my speech as I work through this.
I have just gone through my first day and a half on three times maximum dose of Cloxacillin by IV. I have a Cadd pump that feeds it in continuous 24/7. Tiana may be the only one that knows what I'm talking about. The point is that at this dose the side effects are increased a lot and since the pump runs steady I can not get away from it. It has one advantage and that is there is no up and down. The side effects stay at one constant unpleasant level.

Now here is an excellent opportunity for me to blame all my attitude on the medication. I could!
I could go "poor me". I could write off the next six weeks and avoid people. Not a good idea. Six weeks of the same routine will fix it as a core belief. better to not build it in the first place than to have to bury it. This is not going to be easy, especially when I'm tired and that is another side effect. Anxiety and irritability are the worst ones. The normal physical side effects can be treated but the attitude toward them there is no pill for. (other than tranquillizers) So to avoid going into a state of avoidance I'm going to climb the fence and kick the dragons butt all over the place instead of staying on the safe side and listening to him roar. I might get bit a few times and I might have to retreat but I want to see if exposure to a thought (attitude) can keep the side effects at bay. I'm still in the hospital for a couple more days so I can't hide from people. Lets see if I can be nice to them.:-) I've already had to smile and bite my tongue this morning. On top of that it is windy and raining so I can't retreat out side.

I think I can do this because my coping skills are well established. I'm doing much better anxiety wise this time in the hospital considering the stress level is considerably higher.

I am doing this for us. Fine for me to say this works, time to prove it does.
Happy Thanks Giving all you Canadians. In fact happy day every one.
Going to pull the dragons chain.

Here for all of you.

Hi Mickeylover:  You just reminded me of something.  When I was going through my worse times I had read all about caffeine making you jittery, etc.  I remember I quit drinking coffee for a long time - drank herbal teas and I also avoided any foods containing caffeine - yup, that was chocolate too.  You could always experiement.  Don't eat any for about a month and see how it goes.  Let us know.

This is good to know about meds.

I cut down on coffee after reading that reducing it might help with my anxiety. I have been drinking less for a few weeks now and have had fewer attacks, so I am going to keep my intake of caffeine low now.

Jason

Unfortunately some of us need to take these medications. Fortunately the program works. So if I treat the anxiety side effects the same as I would a negative core belief or even the the common cold, the anxiety level is down to normal which I can handle with coping skills. My advice though is still that if you find one that you can't handle then see if your doctor can find one you can. I also think it is harder for the person with Agoraphobia.  Myself, I have four medications that cause or increase anxiety, So I have reduced caffeine and sugar to lesson the anxiety load that I have to deal with every day. Now a Coke or a coffee is a treat and enjoyable not necessary. Even on bad days I have enough control that I do not have the anxiety turn into a panic attack. Everyone can do this. Knowledge is important. Knowing if a medication is causing anxiety gives you a focus, not knowing increases anxiety. Knowing you are going to have the side effect gives you something you can deal with.

Members,

Many medicines can cause anxiety or make anxiety worse. Discuss your medicines with your doctor if you think that a medicine may be adding to your anxiety.
Prescription medicines that may cause anxiety include:

•    Medications that contain amphetamines, such as Benzedrine, Dexedrine, and Ritalin.
•    Hormones, such as oral contraceptives and thyroid medications.
•    Steroids, such as cortisone, Hexadrol, and prednisone.
•    Respiratory medications, such as albuterol, salmeterol, and theophylline.
•    Other medications, such as phenytoin, levodopa, quinidine, and some antidepressants.

Nonprescription medications that may cause anxiety include:

•    Medications that contain caffeine, such as Anacin, Empirin, Excedrin, No-Doz, and cough medicines.
•    Decongestants, such as phenylephrine, including Sudafed PE.
•    Illegal drugs, such as cocaine, crack, or speed (amphetamines)
