Hi: just joined yesterday...not having panic attacks anymore - been over 15 yrs. so it does get better! however, since I have been ill lately, negative thinking pattern and anxiety showing up and I want to nip it in the bud.
Addressing the therapist switching - when I had my first panic attack yrs. ago, went to hospital and they asked if I wanted to see psychiatrist, so of course, I said yes because I sure wanted to find out what the heck this was about.  Found he did not suit me and after 4 visits I switched to a psychotherapist instead - got to see him more often and could actually have a conversation! the psychiatrist didn't talk much and I needed to talk and be heard - so yes, it is definitely a good thing to switch if you are uncomfortable with your present therapist.  I'm not sure how long a person should try - I think perhaps, one can tell if you "click" or not (?) I also was raped at 18 and someone tried to kill me too. I had stuffed it and never really thought about it until later - these things always come out sooner or later.

Sunbird,

The relationship you have between you and your therapist is very important.  If you do not feel support or you feel you are not getting anything from the relationship then it may be a good idea to look for another.  That being said you need to make sure that you are open as you can be with the relationship. As in any relationship you get as much out of it as you put into it.

I am sorry to hear about what you went through.  After something that horrible it is hard to have faith in humanity.  It is not fair you went through it.  But please stay strong.  We are here for you and you can have faith in us.  It seems impossible but you will get stronger. You will beat this challenging time in your life.  Don't let it break you.   Try to keep an open mind in counseling and if it is not working look for another.

Keep posting and working through the program.

sunbird,

Thank you for sharing your experience with other members here. While you are here, take some time to review the sessions and resources available here. Soon other members will also be along as well to provide support and share their own experiences.

In terms of your therapist, how many sessions have you had with her? Have you noticed any beneficials gains either during your meetings or afterwards? Finding the right match between client and therapist can sometimes be a difficult task. It may take some members multiple sessions to feel comfortable with their therapist or to find a therapist who specializes in a particular population or issue.

Members, what advice can you share with sunbird on finding the right therapist? What was this experience like for you?

Stay close to the boards sunbird and continue to let us know how you are doing. We are here for you!

I was taken hostage at work stabbed, puched, sexually assaulted, choked almost unconscious. Now my life is a living hell, I am sorry I survived the event! I am currently seeing a therapist, but she doesn't seem to  understand she is trying EMD which means she moves her finger 24 times in front of my face and its suppose to stop the flashbacks, nightmares, etc. It's not working, and it seems like my everything is getting worse.
