What comes first, physical symptoms or the anxiety?

Hi! Andre, I'm relatively new to this group, just into my second week but I'm not new to anxiety and panic attacks. I've landed in the ER four or five times over the years thinking something was wrong and they always found it to be anxiety. At first I felt foolish but then I've come to realize that there is nothing wrong with taking care of yourself. Working with a doctor is a great way to know you are on track and there's no other reason for your symptoms. At one point there was something minor that caused my anxiety to worsen but that was treated and now I know what to look for. To bad they didn't have a quick fix for anxiety..LOL Birdie

AndreUIUC, Welcome to our support community! We are always available to answer any questions you have and our members are full of great support and advice. We encourage you to start working through the program and learning more about your generalized anxiety, symptoms of panic attacks and how to control your thoughts. There is a lot of really great information for you read. Also, it's important to journal your thoughts and symptoms so you can start to see if there is any pattern associated with your anxiety. You mentionned that you generally don't feel anxious so this would be a good exercise for you to try. Here are some normal symptoms that people experience during panic attacks: - racing or pounding heart - chest pain or discomfort - tingling or numbness - dizziness, faintness, feeling unsteady - hot flushes or cold chills - muscle tightness - fear of dying - blurred vision - feelings of unreality - shaking, trembling - nausea, stomach problems - feeling light headed - fear of losing control or going crazy - difficulty breathing Brenna, Bilingual Health Educator

Hi everyone. Over the past month I have been slowly working myself in a downward spiral due to chest pains I experienced in the left side of my chest at the beggining of March. I went to the ER, they ran an EKG and said all was fine with my heart, and when I returned from school I visited my physician, had an echo-cardiogram and was told all was well. When I was was diagnosed with a generalized anxiety problem, I began to wonder what triggers it. For me, the cramp in my chest comes and goes (most recently it has moved to the right side of my chest) but I always get anxious about it. My most recent fear is that I have developed some kind of cancerous problem in my lungs. I am only 19 so this is unlikely I suppose, but my fears have not been able to be stopped. Has anyone else experienced pains like this one (related to panic symptoms) during periods when they feel they are not anxious at all? Thank you!
