weight gain and ssri

I took Paxil for 7 years and had gained a lot of weight during that time. I work in an office so I do a lot of sitting and at that time was eating a lot of fast food so I just figured it was my unhealthy lifestyle that made me gain the weight. However, when I got off the Paxil, I started losing weight like crazy. I hadn't started exercising or anything, I just got off the meds. I lost 50 lbs! So, I would say that yes, it does contribute to weight gain. Of course, all those greasy hamburgers didn't help me at all ;) but I think if I lost that much just by getting off it, some of the weight must have been from the meds.

Dear Mel, yes, I had problems with taking SSRI's and gaining weight. I've always been very skinny all my life. I was 1,78 cm and 54 kg before taking SSRI's. When taking it for a year I gained weight up to about 70 kg (!!!). Then I quitted medication and now I am about 64 kg. So I very much think SSRI's do play an important role in gaining weight.

Hi mel, Thanks for posting this question here. As you can see you are not alone in experiencing this side effect. Like the others have suggested, please be sure to consult with your doctor. They will be able to assist you with a plan best suited to your needs. Casey ____________________________ The PC Support Team

I can't take SSRIs but I did take medecines that made me gain weight. And one of my relatives who took paxil gained much weight on it. I agree with Seamsew though, talk to your doctor about it he can figure it all out with you :) -Diva
