I'm kinda glad someone brought this up, because I know I really need to go to the dentist, but all of a sudden I'm petrified of the novicaine. It's not the shot I'm worried about, but the numbness...for some reason I recently became phobic that the novicaine would not only numb my mouth but my throat also, making it hard to breathe. I don't know why all of a sudden this has become an issue because I've been to the dentist before and never has a problem. I read the post about the "dream dentistry" and that might possibly work, but I also have a fear of taking pills, so that's kinda out of the question as well. I do like the suggestion about finding a dentist that will let you come there just to meet the dentist, then go back and have something small done, and so on. I think that might actually work the best. I'm hoping to get myself to the dentist by the end of the year and have everything that's wrong taken care of no matter what. Good luck to everyone with there dentist phobias, keep me posted and I'll do the same!

Great support everyone! Take the time to check with your doctor and talk to your dentist. Prepare a list of questions to help you progress through this. Josie ______________________________ The Panic Center Support Team.

Hi everyone, my name is Heather and I am a Dental Assistant. I have been Dental Assisting for about 11 years. I know all too well about your fears and anxiety about going to the Dentist. That's my job everyday to make my patients more comfortable and educate them on what is going to happen during there visit. There are ways to get your Dental treatment completed in just a couple of visits without fear or being fully aware of what is happening if you are willing to pay for it. It is not cheap but, effective for people who just can't cope with going to the Dentist. It's called dream dentistry. They give you medication to take before your visit, and the dentist will give you meds while your in the chair. You will have to have someone to drive you to and from the dentist office. You will be asleep during the whole process and the dentist will do as much work as he can get done in the time scheduled. He will take a pill crusher and crush the pills and put them under your tounge, you will be sleeping and relaxed while your work is being done. Or you can do IV sedation which you will be fully out via IV drug sedation, you still will need a driver. If you have any other questions feel free to ask me. This is my line of work I have alot of information on stress and the dentist, Hope you all have a great day and remember If you go to the Dentist every six months for your dental cleaning and exam your dental treatment will remain small because you catch it early. Ignore your teeth and they will go away! Heather

If you can get even 1 xanax from your doctor to go to the dentist, you will not have a panic attack in the chair, guaranteed. Tell your doctor and see if he will give you a prescription for just a couple of them. You will be fine, trust me. I used to be a chicken too!

A lot of people are afraid to go to the dentist. If you have anxiety about it, see if your doctor will give you xanax before you go. It really helps. I used to be petrified of needles but now they numb your gums first with a topical ointment before they even put the needle in. It really doesn't hurt that bad at all! I'm so serious. You will be amazed. Getting blood drawn from a regular doctor hurts way more. I have had 2 root canals and I'm telling you, it didn't even hurt. What most people fear is the sound of the drill and the vibrating of it in your mouth. I have never tried the laughing gas or whatever they call it because I honestly am no longer afraid. I would rather go to the dentist than my guinecologist which I know you can't relate! LOL!

I was really scared going back to the dentist as well cause I had a bad experience with the novacaine once. Find a dentist that is willing to take time and work with you. My first visit was just to simply go in and meet the dentist and expain my fears/concerns. I told my dentist I was scared of the shot of novacaine and my next appointment was just to come in and get a shot of the novacaine and then leave. The novacaine my dentist uses does not have anything in it to make your heartbeat faster. I was very scared going in the next week to get the shot but I had to tell myself that it takes less then a minute for them to inject you and then you go leave. After the shot was given to me, I only felt numb on my lips. No fast heart beat or anything so it really helped me to get over that fear. Let me know if you want to know anything else.
