Feeling phobic

Hi, angel. Thanks for listening. As you may already sense, I am not very open with people about my panic or at least I wasn't before. I'm working on it. Now, I am spontaneously on the verge of crying when i open up. I imagine that others have gone through this as well. For so long, I was dealing with my panic (on my own). I felt scared alot back then..about eating, about loved ones' dying, about vomitting, but I always did what i could anyway. I used to think of it like 'sometimes your heart has to catch up to your actions' or something like that...I heard it on television once and used to live by it.For a second there, I thought that my feeling of panic,etc. was only due to a hormonal imbalance because once I got on the Pill I felt better and my eating behavior became more normal. My hormone tests came back okay this time, so, I guess that now I am just change in progress :); hence, the name. It's not until I came to the website here that I realized that I have a more serious problem. I'm going to the counselor finally to sort everything out. The thing with any illness/disorder, that i gather, is that it eats away at every part of your life if left untreated. Before I got my hormonal medication three years ago, I was afraid to get medication and I paid the price of that fear for so long. I admit that now I am afraid to take medication for this (if i need to)...I'm considering it, though.

hi Changeinprogress! I am very proud of you.....thats because you built up the courage to actually TELL your professor about your panic attacks. I congradulate you for that. Sometimes its very hard to tell someone of what we are experiences. But i believe this was an excellent step for you! Secondly, I am also in school and I can relate to what you are feeling. I have left my classes on some occasions.......especially wheni have a new class with a new prof with new students, new setting etc. I suggest you sit on the edge (like u already do). Also, I find that when i keep myself distracted, it helps a lot. For example, I am constantly taking notes in class. I find that when the prof lectures us, I write down important points of what he-she says. This makes the time pass by quicker and you are also doing something productive! These notes can even help you remember the lecture and study for exams better! Try that, see how it works. Dont feel guilty for leaving. I know its hard to say....cause i can totally relate. But try to do this step by step. Just accept your anxiety, work through it, and eventually with practice you will get better. Talk to me anytime. I hope i can help! ;)

Thank you for your support. I'm trying to figure out what my triggers are, but it's so hard to stop crying when I think of anything emotional or people trying to help me overcome my panic. As for school, I can return to class once I leave in most classes (there's one class where the man will actually follow you out in some instances..which only freaks me out more), but I feel so scared that I'm going to need to run out again; then, I'm afraid i'll make a bigger scene. I've actually walked out and come back and then left again. Within a fifteen or so minute time frame. It was quite a nightmare then, and I guess, I don't want to keep reliving that. Today, I didn't go to class. I did go to school to talk to one of my professors about my panic attacks. He was very supportive, and he told me that I'm doing good in his class and to go when I am feeling better. The question is...when will I feel better? I know that exposure is the best way to get over phobias, but I feel like I need to have supervised exposure or something...

Hi Change_InProgress, Being able to identify triggers for your panic is a very important step in helping to overcome this fear. Hopefully the combination of using the program here and seeing your counselor you will be able to make progress with this issue. Can you return to the classroom once your attack subsides? It's best to get right back in to the situation, use some relaxation exercise. Easier said then done, but it's worth a try.

I feel that I've developed an absolute phobia to going to school. I feel very out of control of this situation...I'm doing what I can do. I get up, go, and, then, I have to leave class within less than half an hour because the panic freaks me out (the physical symptoms, etc.). I've made an appt. with a counselor-which is not until next week. I don't feel comfortable with exposing myself to this situation that triggers my attacks-I try to stay, and I sit by the edge close to the door, but, it's not really helping me anymore. Then, I feel worse when I leave. I don't want my grades to go down the toilet, as I've worked hard to be there. What should I do? I'm supposed to be learning in class, not engaging in behavioral therapy!
