Newly Pregnanty with panic disorder

thanks for all your help. my doctor actually told me i can take xanax throughout the day, because i'm on such a small dose. i did some research, and the effects are only seen at high doses throughout the pregnancy. last week was terrible. i didn't think i'd make it. but today, i feel good enough to do small things around the house. when my panick sets in, it takes over my life. and my poor husband didn't know what to do. he was worried about me, the baby, the meds, everything. but i'm learning to trust my doctor, and this forum has really helped. thank you all so much.

Frances, I can understand as I am 35 weeks pregnant and suffer from anxiety. I took imipramine before pregnancy and did fine but they took me off of it when I got pregnant. After a period of decline, I started Paxil which I believe is similiar to Zoloft. So far all tests and ultrasounds came back normal. My OB told me many women are on Zoloft and Paxil with no problems resulting in their pregnancies. Worrying while being pregnant is normal. When you suffer from anxiety and panic, the worry is compounded. It is important to take care of yourself during this time as well. :)

Yes, therapy is a good place to start. And remember - TONS of women with no panic or anxiety disorder are also terrified and scared and worried and anxious when they find out they are pregnant. That doesn't make you different it makes you normal!! Just give yourself some time to get used to the idea and try to relax and breathe. Lighten up on yourself and then you will be able to think more clearly and calmly. This happens to all of us here, so we understand. Also, I am not a doctor, and I'm sure your's is right that you should try to stay calm, but I'm pretty sure there would be quite a few doctors that would disagree with the idea that panic attacks can cause miscarriages. Do yourself a favor and trust your doctor on this one. You need to calm down somehow. Maybe get some counceling, some reasurrance is probably what you need. good luck and CONGRATS on the baby! :)

I just found out that I'm pregnant. It's planned, and I thought I'd be okay. I've suffered from severe panic attacks since i was four. i was taking wellbutrin and an occasional xanax for attacks, but hadn't had any panic episodes. until i found out i'm pregnant. i can't deal with this. my doctor told me to take the xanax, since i'm on a low dose, because the risks are slight and i can't cope like this. he said with the severity of my attacks, a miscarriage is more likely than any effects of xanax. he wants to put me on zoloft, but i'm afraid of the lag time until it kicks in. i feel like i'm all alone. all of my other friends were so happy when they became pregnant. all i am is terrified. i know i'm happy, but i just don't deal with change well. does anyone know what i'm going through? i feel so alone. and scared of taking medicine for my baby.
