Sleep problems- sudden awakening

I agree with Jamison who suggests you change something about your "sleep pattern" like change the bed around or sleep in a different room. Right now, it's like you'Ve programmed your brain to panic at bedtime, you expect it to happen and it does. CBT can help with those impulsive thoughts/fears of dying. For instance, ask yourself why would you be dying? You've probably had a check-up with your doc which can reassure you because chances are, you'Re perfectly healthy. So now you need to put that thought into perspective and evacuate it from your mind and then replace it with a more realistic one like "I'm not feeling too good, but it will pass, it's just my mind acting up because it's used to acting up at this time, and I will soon calm down". Seriously, try CBT, it works!

Ah yes, bedtime. Also known as the chamber of horrors... Sounds like having your mom with you was a comfort and created a safe place for you. I would just remember that it happens to you at the same time every night and that the same symptoms are present. Maybe change your room around or try to create a tranquil space. Do you do any relaxation exercises before bed? I've tried to be consistent about doing progressive muscle relaxation and visualization before bed and my sleep seems to be better and longer (even though my mattress is a major cause of my sleep disturbance). In any case, sweet sleep to you tonight.

For a couple of years now, every night just as I am about to fall asleep completely, I wake up in a panic thinking I am dying. It can happen several times a night and it makes it so hard to get to sleep. On some nights it's really bad. I finally get to sleep and I awaken suddenly and jump out of bed looking for a way out. I think I am dying so I run to the bathroom to drink water, even if I have water at my night table. It's like a horrible habit that I cannot control. Also, everytime I actually get into my bed I start feeling some come and go pains in my chest and I think i'm having a heart attack. I could be perfectly fine just a few minutes later when I'm in the other room, but whenever I actually get into bed, it starts. It's really weird. The past two weeks sleeping in a hotel room on vacation with my mom beside me in another bed, I didn't feel this way. It's like being in this room and being alone triggers all these sensations. It really sucks! Has anyone else experienced stuff like this?
