Hey jlc,

I hope you're still holding out.

You already have plenty of good advice from other posters here. I can only add a couple of things: 1) The first few days and weeks are the hardest, but it does get easier and easier with time.  2) Make sure to keep working through the program (under the "program" tab on the top of this page). You have one of your trophies, so keep on going. Some of the exercises seem very simple, but they somehow help with getting the right mindset about quitting.

Hey JLC!!!

Welcome to the SSC and congrats on your decision to quit smoking!  I hope you are still doing well on your journey and haven't started eating the bark off the trees!    If you look through the threads, there is one with "Crave Basket" in the title.  There many members shared what items they relied on to help them through their cravings.  One of the top choices was ice cold water!  Many kept a squeeze bottle at their side perpetually.  Water is good for you and will also help to fill the void in your stomach!  The only disadvantage to that is if you are not in close proximity to a rest room!!!   Check out the thread to see if you think any of the suggestions may work for you!

As far as eating and gaining weight goes... do what ever it takes to not smoke!  Just remember that your metabolism rate has decreased because you aren't pumping the nicotine stimulant into your body any more.  So, without enough exercise to burn those additional calories the waist line is going to expand!  Several of our quit buddies started an exercise program when they quit and have been able to maintain or even lose weight.  I am in total agreement that you should do what ever it takes to maintain your quit!  Work on the dieting once your quit is pretty much under control.

Hang tough, stick close, read and learn and post often!  We'd all like to hear how you are doing!

Hi jic. my advice is that everything is allowed providing you don't smoke. Just hold on for the 1st 72 hours then you will be pleasantly surprised. You can do it. What is 72 hours in lifetime????? john

Hi jlc,

That is good advice from waldd.  Definitely ignore the food, unless you have prepared carrot and celery sticks, or sugar free candy to put in your mouth when you have a craving.  Have a look above under Tools and My Program.

Remembering that you cannot smoke (Not one Puff!) is the hardest message to get into your brain.  It ( your brain) has been conditioned to its 'reward' each time you smoked.  Now you have to work out some small, low-cost rewards to give it for NOT having a cigarette. These habit craves  are often the hardest to get over. You are in the first week right now, and it's not called "Hell Week" for nothing.  Hang in there! Use whatever helps you!......and

Whatever it takes, just don't smoke!!!

Hi jlc, Welcome on board, many more members here will be able to post better advice from experience, can just say that the first few days for me (still fresh on my mind) were the toughest for the same reason: trying to remind myself that I could not smoke anymore! Would not worry about the food right now, just get past the habit of smoking in any way you can first. Best of luck and will keep fingers crossed all gets better soon! Walt

18 hours in.... Remembering that I don't smoke is the hardest. I keep getting up to go outside and have one then remember that I can't. That's when the cravings really start. I also need to figure out something other than food to get over the cravings I keep eating!
