Curious about your opinion

Very intersting, I also analyze this with in myself as well. I didn't have a bad childhood, wasn't babied wasn't ignored, ntohing like that that. My only thoughts regarding this come to three specific things. 1) I remember being younger and when my folks would go out for the evening I was ok, until it got close to the time that they were supposed to be home. I would get terrified if they were late, thinking that something terrible may have happened to them. 2) I just recently read online that there was study in NY about the links to adolescent smoking and panic disorders, the numbers were quite high, another possibility? 3) I used to smoke alot of pot when i was younger, when I say alot, I mean alot...it got to the point where when I smoked I would have panic attacks, at the time Ididn't know what they were, I just thought I was too high, but that was enough for me to not smoke pot anymore. I was fine for a few years, but than panic attacks started on there on without being induced by any drugs. At that time, I just dealt with it, no meds, no therapy and they went away on their own, until 6 years late, they came back ten fold. Those are my theories, I think that some of us are just overly sensitive to our bodies, and any little quirk in our breathing/heartbeat/etc works us up a bit.

I think about this sometimes....where does it come from? Did I do this to myself? Is it my fault? I am not sure...I think I may have a chemical imbalance, but my grandmother died from 'mental illness' (my mother says it was depression) but it is not mentioned as talking about such issues is 'taboo.' The post traumatic stress disorder -- A year and half ago my apartment was broken into in the middle of the night, because of the scaffolding and all...and my roommate and I were terrified....and it happened again -- to the point where I become paranoid....I have been dealing with anxiety for a few years now...but I think that incident triggered something....and I was going through so much at the time (I had just moved to England from Canada, I was living with my roommate who I barely knew, I had just gotten engaged, and was trying to plan a wedding and my schoolwork was crazy)...I am sorry for rambling....In my case it is a lot of things...but fear plays a big part for me.... Vickers, I hope you are feeling well... I hope this helps... Take care and let us know how you are doing... Best, B

I think people's personalities are all different, some people are more high strung, others are mellow, some don't seem very emotional at all, etc etc. I think some of this is just inborn and based on genese. I also believe people can acquire personality traits through their upbringing and life circumstances. I think some people may be SOOO very high strung and anxious by nature they may truly have a need for some "evening out" by artifical means (A.D.s) I think that others, who have faced trauma or faulty upbringing, may just need some ironing out in a behavioral sense (with counciling or CBT). I have many friends who have been given AD's by doctors to help them "through" their problems, but it is really just helping them "around" them. I think its an over-done thing- (the prescription of AD's) and is becoming a band-aid for all kinds of stuff. It seems to be the first thing a doctor reccommends anymore. Does anyone else find that kinda strange? Like, are the docs trying to "groom" us or make us more compliant, to make their own jobs easier? Oh well, just my .02. I am not against AD's, but I have a lot of questions about them and what the best purpose for them really is. Good thread

I am an analyzer. I analyze things to death. Probably one reason I have panic / anxiety - I analyze all of my physical symptoms into more than they are. So, I have been trying to find reasons for panic / anxiety and I have read many articles about it and I am very curious as to everyone's opinions as to why it is. The drug companies claim it is a chemical imbalance. Possible. But, these claims are coming from drug companies and personally, from my own 7 year nightmare called Paxil, I don't trust drug companies when it comes to this sort of thing and truly believe they tell people this to make a buck. Many psychiatrists believe this stems from past events like post traumatic stress syndrome, child abuse, etc.... I have read that this may very well come from people growing up in an abusive home - when we grow up and move out, those survival instincts of constantly being aware of danger that we learned as children stays with us, but because we are no longer in the danger we were in as children, those instincts turn into panic / anxiety and we become too aware of other things we see as possible dangers - health problems, certain objects, certain situations, agoraphobia, etc. Some believe this comes from repressed memories and events. Personally, I grew up in an abusive home and this theory makes the most sense to me. But, I would seriously like everyone's opinion who cares to share it. I would also like some opinions from the moderators since you obviously know more about this than I do. So everyone, what is your opinions? Chemical imbalance or thought provoked? Personally, my opinion is that it is thought provoked. I hope you all have a panic free weekend! I know, I know - yeah, right! But, I can hope for you all the same! ;)
