Mike, some people do lose weight when they quit smoking. However, most people gain no more than 7 pounds. I love food and that's how much I gained. I was told by one of my nurses that I'd have to gain 70 lbs to be in the same shape I was in while smoking. Plus, I have always had an easier time losing weight than quitting smoking. I've been in 12 Step program for 23 years. It generally isn't suggested that people take on more than one problem at a time, because the stress of doing so often causes people to fail at all of the problems they take on. You have a better chance at succeeding at losing weight or smoking than at both at the same time. However, they can be done consecutively. I waited six months before losing weight. I've lost my quit smoking weight as well as an additional 7 pounds, 14 lbs. (I was heavy to begin with.)  I would have a good, heart to heart talk with the wife. I know someone who hounded her husband about his weight when he quit smoking, and she ended up dying of lung cancer. Her husband is still alive, although he was 7 years older. (True story. Long one, too.) Recently, an article cited ice cold water with raising metabolism. (Metabolism slows a little when we quit smoking.) Drinking ice cold water has that short term effect. The water also fills you up and loosens mucus, which will help clean out your lungs. Vegetable and sugar-free snacks are also the way to go.

Hi Mike,

Well--first a big congrats to you & Mrs Mike on the decision to quit the nicodemon!!! You are doing yourself one of the best favors of your life! You'll be free from the addiciton--from hiding the act, the smell, and the planning of how & when you will get your next one. This isn't easy--but soooo worth it!!!

Now to the weight issue. I think some weight gain should be expected--but if you are able to also watch your intake; I'm sure you can keep it to a minimum. Most advice on these boards has been to get your quit under control before embarking on a weight loss program.

As Rock says below--plenty of ice water & healthy snacks will help with quitting and with keeping the weight gain to a minimum.

Just remember N.O.P.E. !!!!!! No matter what!!

Welcome, Mike!  While I, too, am trying to find the magic bullet to weight loss, I can strongly suggest that you get active NOW.  I spent the first 6-months of my quit feeling sorry for myself and fighting the 'woe is me' battle....all the while conveniently shoving anything in my mouth that didn't eat me first.  Now that I am over poor little self, I am now literally having to work my a$$ off to lose a years-worth of snacks.....

Change your focus to healthy eating and increased activity levels can be the magic balance to maintaining your weight and diverting your attention away from smoking!

Keep the Quit,

Dave

Mike, congrats to you and the Misses on quitting smoking!  The biggest thing is sensible snacking to replace the smoking.  Carrot sticks, celery sticks, sugar free stuff, etc.  And drink lots of iced water!  It helps flush the toxins out of your system.  And just remember, you can always lose weight.  You can't lose lung cancer, emphasemia, COPD, or other medical issues!!  You can do this!  We're all pulling for a healthy, trimmer, smoke free Mike!  P.S.  Good looking stats at 10 days smoke free too!

ok, here is the bottom line. Me and the Misses quit a couple of weeks ago. Whenever I have quit in the past I always gained a lot of weight, sort of a mind game that I played. If I gained weight, I would start back to smoking. Sort of a, "hey I do not like the way I look so I will smoke and deal with the weight". Yawn...predictable, I did it over and over again. Anyways, the misses (3 months) is a real pain when it comes to my weight and she is not giving me a break even after I quit smoking (I don't look bad). Of course she wants me lose weight for my "health". As a matter of fact, I do not plan to gain weight I plan to lose weight (yes for me not for her-lol). I am pulling every trick in the book. I know this is against almost all recommendations from those with experience, but I truly believe it can be done. More later....
Best Regards,
Mike
