Love and peace to you Crystal. I will check out those books for sure. It's first reassuring to know that one is not alone in this.

Hi Shea I am agrophobic too, have been for 4 years now. Severe avoidance like you have done, stopped traveling and needing a safe person is agrophobic. I am currently doing CBT therapy, I wont take meds, going the herb route, meditation, breathing exercises, and keeping a journal so I can identify and work to change my negative thinking are helping me. I can go some places with a safe person. Working on getting out on my own is tough. I suggest that you read "Hope and Help For Your Nerves, and "Simple Effective Treatment of Agrophobia" by Dr. Claire Weekes. The "anxiety and phobia workbook" by bourne are great also. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. If you work to identify your triggers and change your thoughts there is a way back to you.

Thanks Ruby. My doc put me on Paxil a year ago and I have Xanax for 'those' times. I went to a psychologist to do some talk therapy but she referred me to some books by Thich Nhat Hanh and tried to teach me to be "mindful"...that didn't do much. But I will take your advice and mention it to my doc and let him make the diagnosis.

Hi Shea, You might be showing signs of agrophobia, but the best thing to do is go to your doctor and speak to them about how you have been etc. And the doctor will tell you if you have agrophobia or your might be just in the early stages of starting to get agrophobia. I hope this helps. Ruby....... :)

It took until today to give it a name. But there it is. I have stopped traveling for work, I am in mortal fear of staying in hotel rooms alone, I need a safe person to go out of town with... The fact that I can shop, can go to the bookstore etc. convinced my doctor that I only had 'anxiety' when in truth I have lost a good part of my previous life. I just wanted to say I am glad this site is here and that I don't feel like such an oddball (everyone in real life says 'snap out of it'). I have read this board for a few months and I appreciate you all and your sharing your experiences, in which I found out what is 'wrong' with me. Shea
