hi again.   stress? you asked the right place.   i have a super stressful job..i am a headhunter/recruiter in NYC....i see 35 people a day and they are all unemployed...i used to run out after each appt. for a smoke.     what do i do now?  i drink a lot of water, i go into an empty conference room and breathe deeply...i tell a co-worker.."i would kill for a cig right now" and the co-worker will say..."you're doing great...want gum? nuts? a walk?"  i tell people....  i ask for help.  i walk around the block.  i think to myself "wow, i would be smoking right now but i am not...how cool am i?"   i count my blessings.  i make a list of my blessings.  i make a list of reasons why i want to stay alive...i make a list of the people who will be proud of me as a non-smoker and i am always the first on the list.   you will need to learn how to be WHO YOU ARE but as a non-smoker....in the beginning of my quit i would say "how can i live without this? how will i get through my day?" and then one wonderful day you will think back to that sentence and smile...and realize that the cigarette does NOT define you.   you WILL be able to answer mail, the phone, hear bad news, good news, eat a big meal, have an arguement, make up, stay mad, forgive, have a drink, make love, get off a bus, come out of a movie and NOT HAVE A CIGARETTE AFTERWARDS.  hard to believe..but it's true.    water.  friendship.  patience.  pride.   YOU CAN DO THIS.

Thankyou Tresa and Sassy,
I need all the help I can get and think this site is awesome. I feel stronger everytime I log on. I am quitting with the patches. Have had many failed attempts before but feel I've learned something from each one of them. Have had a week off work because of a chest infection go back to work on Monday. I need to learn how to cope with stress without a cigarette. I'll try deep breaths or a walk in the fresh air. Anyone got any tips on dealing with stress at work.
Luv lola

Hi There!  Welcome!  this is the best place for you to do one of the most important things you will ever do in your life...you will start out afraid and frustrated and doubtful....but with each passing day it will get better and the quit will be easier...before you know it you will be months and months into it.    congratulate yourself for your decision...for finding 'us'...and for each cigarette you didn't smoke.    one day at a time...and i agree...NotOnePuffEver is an awesome mantra.   post often, read often and remember....we are all here to support you...you can do it!

Hi Everyone,
I have been reading the advice on the forums and finding them very helpful. I am just introducing myself for the first time. Have been 5 days smoke free and feel that there is strength in numbers. I like N.O.P.E. (not one puff ever), and all the other good advice. I'm glad I found this site.
