It really does get better. If you go to "you tube" or find some jokes... something to make you laugh. Also ... don't look at it as "giving up" cigarettes. You are taking control.... You can smoke.. BUT You choose Not to. You are taking back control of your life and your health, Cry when you need to, laugh also.. You are no longer hiding your real emotions under a blanket of smoke and poison. Sounds like everyone has really done a good job explaining everything so I just wanted to let you know that I also went through it and given time it will to pass. Cry when you feel like it, it is sure better than smoking! Beckylynn... Don't you just hate those emotions? Gosh I remember them so well! I was always strong, independant, tough. Nothing got the best of me. I quit smoking and turned into this whinning, sniffling big baby. A lot of our emotions are bottled up when we smoke. Face it, we smoked when we were happy, sad, scared, tired... whatever the emotion the cigarette was the way we dealt with it. When we quit, we have to learn how to deal with our emotions another way. It isn't easy but is all part of the quit process. Rewards are an important aspect of your quit. You need to reward yourself frequently for the successes you have achieved here. Six days quit is no small feat. You are doing awesome and are almost through what is known as hell week! Congratulations! What are you going to do to celebrate? There is also the matter of endorphines. Excercise will get some of those feel good feelings pumping through you system again. Go for a walk and smell the flowers. It will do you a world of good. Whatever you do, don't smoke. It will just send you right back to square one again and you don't want that! Early in my quit, I kept telling myself... "everyday is one day closer to never feeling this way again". It is true. The emotions are something you have to go through and learn how to deal with. I promise you it is worth it. Keep moving forward, one day at a time. You are doing great! Beckylynn, Again, this is quite common among new quitters. When you smoked, nicotine triggered the release of neurotransmitters in your brain. These neurotransmitters are responsible for good mood. When you quit, it isn't uncommon for your mood to take a nose dive. This case of the blues is temporary and until it passes, there are a few things you can do: * Exercise as it releases endorphins and these are also conducive to good mood. * Rewarding yourself with something pleasurable. This triggers the same release of neurotransmitters we mentionned. * Get outside and get adequate rest as these also affect your mood. Members, please feel free to keep sharing your experiences and what worked for you! Danielle, Bilingual Health Educator

It's a big part of recovery from addiction, Steph. You are in a physical withdrawal state and that's both physically and psychologically painful; the crying comes from the grieving that your body and mind are doing at the "loss" of a "friend" - the pain of having to say goodbye to a friend who is trying to drag you down into the quicksand!! Cry away and then shake it off... make friends with real Air and Green stuff and forget about the lighters and ashtrays and the beckoning pack of filthy smokes... yes, nomatter how 'cute' the logo looks on your pack it is the ultimate commercial lie... it is no friend but a thief YOU PAY(!) to rob the very breath from your lungs... Cry and, when you're finished, wipe your tears, stand up and repeat after me "This is MY Life. I drive this boat!!" Beckylynn, Through the time I've been here, I have learned that women have a much more emotional time with giving up cigarettes. My wife is the prime example, only her release wasn't crying..It was yelling at me all the time. I found out here at the SSC, that this was just a normal release of her frustration. Well I was told it gets better, and you know what? It is getting better. You are doing great..almost done with hell week. Keep strong, and it does get easier..You can do this!! All weekend I would cry at the drop of a hat. I don't know why, I am not usually like that. My craves were not bad, but my emotions were terrible. I will be glad when that passes. It's been two days of it now. Any advice or encouragement will help. Running out of tissues.
